Harry Kane demanded swift improvement from Bayern Munich after their Bundesliga title showdown saw them humbled by Bayer Leverkusen.

Thomas Tuchel’s men were aiming to seize top spot against their title rivals on Saturday evening at the BayArena. The game quickly turned into a nightmare for Bayern.

Leverkusen cruised to a 3-0 success with the goals coming from Josip Stanisic, Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong. It leaves Bayern five points off the pace in the race for the title, while their 11-season monopoly of the Bundesliga now under serious threat.

If they are to retain the trophy once more, Kane wants to see almost-instant improvement from his side. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We didn’t play well with the ball. I thought the pressure, especially in the first half and even in the second half, we pressed them well, but every time we won it back we gave it straight back to them.

“That allowed them to build momentum. In the final third we weren’t good in one-vs-one battles, we weren’t good in duels, the final delivery wasn’t there today, so a really disappointing day with the ball.

“We’re five points behind now but there are still a lot of games to go. This one hurts, we wanted a different outcome, but we have to focus on, first, the Champions League, and obviously the next game. There are a lot of games to be played and we have to try and make up as many points as we can, as quickly as we can.”

Kane was also asked about his thoughts on the title race so far, and the fact that Bayern were now potentially underdogs. He replied: “That’s not for us to decide.

“That’s for everyone else to decide. For us, we have to focus on ourselves, we have to improve, we have to get better. We know that. The games are coming thick and fast so we have to turn it around quick.”

Tuchel’s side now take a break from their league commitments with a Champions League last-16 clash against Italian giants Lazio on Wednesday. They are then back in action next Sunday against Bochum.

Kane will hope that his form is key to Bayern forcing themselves back into contention. The England star has proven an inspired signing from Tottenham. He has 28 goals and eight assists in 28 games in all competitions this term after joining for £100m in the summer.
