A Scottish woman has allegedly become the latest suspected victim of the notorious XL Bully dog breed after she was bitten in the face.

The woman was taken to hospital after the alleged attack by a 'bulldog'. Officers from Police Scotland were called to reports of an attack in the Silvertrees area of Bothwell, in Greater Glasgow, at around 10.40am on Friday. An investigation to establish the circumstances remains ongoing.

Staff at Bothwell Post Office issued an alert to dog owners in the area claiming the woman was trying to save her puppy when she was attacked. They said: "A bulldog/bully type dog got off its owner’s leash and attacked a puppy. Whilst trying to separate the dogs, the owner of the puppy was bitten in the face. This happened around the Silvertrees area. Please be careful and alert all dog owners in the area."

According to the Daily Record, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.40am on Friday, February 9, we were made aware of a woman being attacked by a dog in the Silvertrees area of Bothwell. The woman attended hospital for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

It comes just days after police confirmed that the dogs which mauled Essex pensioner Esther Martin to death, as she visited her grandson, were of the XL Bully breed. The woman was killed after she was attacked by two dogs at a property in Jaywick, and left with fatal injuries. The owner, her son-in-law Ashley Warren, a wannabe rapper who goes by the name Wyless Man, was arrested and released on bail until March 5.

Initial reports placed both attacking dogs, named Bear and Beauty and two of eight that Warren was said to have owned, as XL Bullys and police have now confirmed what type of dog they were. In the aftermath of the February 3 attack, specialist officers destroyed both dogs at the property after responding to the incident – which was shockingly said to have been seen by Esther's 11-year-old grandson, who she was visiting. He then ran outside, shouting for help.

Following a rise in the number of dog attacks, the Conservative Government have made it illegal to breed, sell, advertise, re-home, exchange, abandon or allow the creatures to stay in England and Wales and it is not legal to have an XL bully as a pet, a rule that came into force on February 1, unless the animal is specifically listed on the exempt register.

The Scottish Government followed Rishi Sunak’s lead in bringing in new legal safeguards and from February 23, anyone who owns an XL bully-type dog must keep them muzzled and on a lead in public places. It will also be an offence to breed, sell, exchange, advertise or abandon dogs of this breed. From August 1, all XL Bully dogs in Scotland will require an exemption certificate or be waiting for one to be issued. Penalties for breaching the new safeguards are up to six months imprisonment and or a fine up to £5,000.
