BBC reality TV show's future in doubt as applications for a new series paused

The BBC has cast doubt on whether it will schedule a second series of reality TV show Survivor as it has now paused applications for series two.

The show, which is hosted by Joel Dommet, was filmed in the Dominican Republic. But according to reports, despite being on at a prime time on Saturday evening straight after Strictly Come Dancing, it failed to attract the amount of viewers expected.

But fans were left hopeful that the broadcaster would schedule another series following a call-out for contestants on the Take Part page on its website, back in December. However, now, a new note on the Survivor UK website said: "Applications/casting paused. As things stand, we are not processing or taking any further applications at this time.” But a spokesperson for the BBC said: "No decision has been made."

And it seems as though this is an isolated update as other shows on the Take Part website including I Kissed A Girl and Race Across The World remain on the webpage, even though the closing date was May last year. Hoping that the reboot of the which was on ITV 20 years ago, would get a second series, Joel said at the time: "Fingers crossed… there’s a lot of stuff that we would do slightly differently.Like with every first series, it’s hard, so I think a second series would be amazing.Everyone seems to really love it, so I’m excited that – hopefully – [we get to] do another one."

Back in December the call for new contestants read: "BBC One’s Survivor is actively casting for a potential second series and we are looking for a new wave of fearless castaways and strategic masterminds who would be interested in being considered for the chance to play the ultimate physical and psychological game.”

The show made its comeback on BBC1 last October as 18 hopefuls battled it out to be crowned the Sole Survivor. They had to endure tough conditions, betrayal and mind games to walk away with a cash prize of £100,000. However, fans were not impressed by the reboot series and switched channels as they complained it was too boring and was better suited to another channel.

Taking to social media, one viewer said: "I'm bored already #Survivor." Another added: "Good grief. Is this really what the #BBC think the great British public want to watch on a Saturday night?" Someone else commented: "#Survivor on @‌BBCOne is c***. Gave it 20minutes and it's dull. Bring back #TheWheel."

A fourth quipped: "I’m not sure I care about anything that is happening. #SurvivorUK #Survivor." While one viewer wrote: "Good grief. What a hyped up heap of s***e. So irritating. I tried, but the fake enthusiasm is a killer. Tarrah now! #Survivor." Someone else added: "Best of luck to #Survivor but wrong channel & wrong timeslot. It'll be axed by this time next year." While another commented: "Not sure about this #Survivor show on #BBC1 at peak time, feel like it has been done to death on other sides, will give it a chance."
