A mum attacked a hairdresser who dated her brother for supposedly 'moving on' too quickly after his death.

Zoe Emms, joined by her son Liam Emms, ambushed the victim on her way to work, viciously assaulting her and dragging her to the ground.

BirminghamLive reports the victim could not sleep and was unable to eat or drink for two weeks following the assault.

There had been years of animosity between Emms and the female victim, who had been in a relationship with her brother.

But the mum, 44, became annoyed when the woman 'moved on' too quickly after his death, with the pair even squabbling over funeral fees.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard how there had been 'ill-feeling' between the two women for around two years.

It left the victim fearing she would be 'attacked' and she carried a wheel brace 'for her own protection'.

Prosecutor John Brotherton said: "Since the funeral, there had been bad blood between the defendant and the complainant over money - funeral costs and the like."

The victim was working at Crazy Cutz hair salon when she went to the shop next door to buy a birthday card. She spotted the defendants outside and kept her head down as she returned to work at about on September 10, 2020.

She was 'expecting trouble' and could see the pair approaching her out of the corner of her eye. She was then dragged to the ground before Zoe Emms lifted her foot and kicked her to the head.

Liam Emms, 28, kicked her face, with the victim quickly noticing blood in her mouth. The assault only came to an end when a witness shouted "get off" forcing the attackers to walk away from the scene, while Zoe Emms took the wheel brace with her.

Mr Brotherton revealed how the victim was left with cuts to her upper lip and inside her mouth, grazing to her bottom lip and four loose teeth.

Zoe Emms later told police she was upset at the victim for 'moving on' with another man 'soon after' her brother's funeral.

The court heard how her son Liam committed a number of other offences including robbery at Midlands News next to the salon.

The victim was behind the counter when she immediately recognised the thief, who had his hood up as he strolled towards her on December 30, 2019.

He pushed the shop worker, forcing her to stumble backwards on her feet, before pushing her a second time cusing her fall against a wall. The thief tried to pick up the till but the 'afraid' woman - who was hurt in her left eye - pushed back.

Emms then 'snatched' packets of cigarettes as he ran away, the court heard. Police arrested him after tracing fingerprints from the scene.

The convicted robber also attacked a mental health worker while in custody for an unrelated matter at Oldbury police station on July 18, 2021.

He was in a cell when the worker spoke to him through the hatch. The defendant claimed he needed to be sectioned and was unfit to be interviewed, but the victim disagreed.

He became 'agitated' and started waving his hands through the hatch before grabbing the woman and pulling her arm through.

He bit her left index finger and grabbed her lanyard, which then broke, before police officers rushed over and used PAVA spray to pacify him. Her Fitbit watch was damaged in the process.

The woman needed hospital treatment including a tetanus vaccine, antibiotics and a hepatitis test.

Liam Emms has 21 convictions for 41 offences including robberies, attempted robbery, common assault and theft.

He was in breach of a 10-week sentence, suspended for 12 months, handed to him for a public order offence, when he committed the robbery.

Philip Brunt, defending Liam Emms, said the accused was in the 'grip' of a drug addiction which made him 'erratic and unpredictable' when he committed the robbery.

He is no longer addicted to drugs. Alison Scott-Jones, defending Zoe Emms, said the mum committed an 'impulsive act'.

She added: "This was a very nasty incident. Family arguments should not lead to fisticuffs."

The mum had two previous convictions for common assault dating back to 1999.

Both defendants of Tipton, West Midlands, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Liam Emms admitted further charges of robbery, assault on an emergency worker, breach of a suspended sentence order and two counts of criminal damage.

He was jailed for 30 months while his mum was handed a 23-week sentence, suspended for two years.

Both the mother and son were also handed restraining orders.
