If you're still planning your Valentine's Day menu, it can't hurt to consider serving some foods that will boost your libido.

The most romantic day of the year is just around the corner, and many couples will be planning to spend some quality time together. To help make the day extra special, Dr Michael Mosley, creator of the Fast 800 diet, has shared some foods that will help boost your libido.

The doctor, who regularly shares advice on BBC's The One Show, is a huge advocate for a Mediterranean-style style diet, which means eating a lot of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, whole grains and unsaturated fats. It just so happens that these foods can not only help you sleep better and lift your mood, but they can also help your sex drive.

On his website, Dr Mosley writes: "There are several ways that a nutritious diet can benefit your sex life: it can boost your libido, improve blood flow and heart health, improve stamina, and can raise the levels of hormones that cause arousal." These types of foods, for example chocolate and oysters, are known as aphrodisiacs.

However, research has found that other foods, particularly those that make up part of the Mediterranean diet, can also benefit your sex life, Wales Online reports. A study from 2007 found that women who consistently followed this way of eating scored higher on desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm and satisfaction.

Meanwhile, another piece of research from 2006 found that men who ate more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and olive oil over a two-year period had improved erectile function. On the Fast 800 website, Dr Mosley shared specific foods to add to your diet which could help improve libido.

Eating seeds or chickpeas can have a positive effect on libido because they are full of phytoestrogens, which works in a similar way to oestrogen, an important female sex hormone. Fatty fish such as salmon, anchovies, tuna and mussels are also good, because they are rich in omega-3-fatty acids, which promotes blood flow to all areas of your body.

Pistachio nuts aren't just delicious as a snack, but they are also rich in protein, fibre and healthy fats. They have also been found to help reduce symptoms of erectile dysfunction. We should also be eating more leafy greens, such as spinach, kale and Swiss chard, which are all high in magnesium - which can positively effect testosterone levels.

Beetroots, meanwhile, are high in vitamins and antioxidants, as well as nitrates, which can help expand blood vessels and improve blood flow. Lastly, fermented foods such as kimchi are full of probiotics, vitamins and minerals which can help reduce stress and anxiety.
