Richard Hammond, star of The Grand Tour, has shared how his co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and James May 'ruined' his camping experience during their latest adventure in Mauritania.

"I love camping but they just ruin it by moaning and breaking my tent, which is irritating," Richard revealed. The episode, named Sand Job, sees the trio following the original Paris-Dakar rally route in modified sports cars.

Despite a past accident that left him in a coma, Richard isn't scared of the risks. "No more than I usually do," he said when asked about driving into a minefield. Jeremy's warnings about bats potentially carrying ebola were taken "with a pinch of salt" by Richard. He reassured fans, saying, "We are well protected by professionals who check out what we're going to do wherever we go."

The Grand Tour star, 54, joked about the show's security, saying: "If someone wanted to kidnap us, they'd need a small army," and "But who'd take us on? There isn't a big enough radiator to chain Jeremy to."

Richard shared that he sometimes made little films for himself in the desert when they weren't filming, just as a reminder of what an exciting experience it's been.

He said: "Bits of it can't be filmed and we're just making distance," and "I made a little video for myself actually on my telephone. It was seven or eight o'clock, we had wrapped filming for that day, so we're just blasting through the desert in an almost completely knackered Aston Martin and it was exciting to just to think, 'Wow, this is where I've been.'"

Jeremy has already announced The Grand Tour is coming to an end. Sand Job is the penultimate show, with one final adventure being broadcast later in the year. Richard commented: "We've always known it's not going to go on forever," and "We started working together 23 years ago. But we want people to enjoy the Mauritania special for what it is."

Deciding to end such a successful run must have been tough, but Richard says it's not all over yet. He stated: "We wanted to end it in some semblance of dignity," and "But we're not there yet. There's another magnificent film coming out later in the year. So we're still going at the moment."

Richard also said he feels like a part of him stays in the exotic places they visit for their wild stunts."We've always felt as though these trips, collectively, are a place that we all exist outside of normal life," he said. "There's the moment when the director calls action and it's as though we three just inhabit that version of ourselves for that moment. And then we go and exist in that particular wonderful, exciting world."

The Grand Tour: Sand Job is available on Prime Video from 16 February 2024
