Patrick Mahomes' mum, Randi, cannot hide her excitement when she watches her NFL star son play but admits she still gets worried watching from the sidelines.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is hoping to lead his team to another victory in the Super Bowl on February 11. The showdown against the San Francisco 49ers will be his fourth appearance in five years on the NFL's biggest stage - with sporting immortality now very much on the line.

The 28-year-old will have plenty of support from friends and family at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas too as he aims to solidify his legacy as one of the best QBs of his generation. As he prepares for his third Vince Lombardi Trophy, one of his biggest cheerleaders will be his devoted mum.

Opening up to PEOPLE about what it's like to watch her son compete against some of the toughest players in the sport, Randi confessed that a big game like the Super Bowl still makes her nervous. However, it appears that she is less concerned about the result and more about the health of her boy during proceedings.

She admitted: "I still get nervous. The grey hair, I tell him, I'm like, 'You're giving me grey hair, and it's not because I'm a grandma now, it's because I'm having to watch you hit by 300 pound guys.' Usually when I'm screaming at the game, it's like, 'Don't hit him. Don't hit him.' "

Randi was only 20-years-old when she welcomed her son into the world back in 1995,. Now 48, the mother-of-three shares as powerful a bond as ever with her firstborn, Patrick. Speaking with warmth, she says: "Patrick is my first child, and I grew up with him basically."

At a young age, becoming a parent forced her to grow up quickly as she explains: "I had him at a young age, and I don't go out saying that's the best thing to do, but it was the best thing for me just because it made me grow up. Sometimes, I look back and I'm like, 'Where would I be if I didn't have him?' Because I wasn't going down a bad road, I just wasn't going on a road."

With Patrick now a father of two, Randi has become a grandmother and is looking forward to a family reunion in Vegas, she said excitedly: "I get to see all my children together, and I get to see my grandkids, so I'm like, 'I'm winning no matter what'."

However, ahead of the Super Bowl, her son faced personal turmoil which has come up at a less than ideal time when it comes to his own preparations for the showpiece. Patricks father, Patrick Mahomes Sr, was reportedly arrested and is facing a DWI charge in Texas.

It remains to be seen whether the arrest of his dad just days before the Super Bowl will have affected the focus of the consummate professional quarterback. His father, who is believed to have been bailed for $10,000, could be looking at 10 years in jail if found guilty.
