The highly controversial upcoming interview of conservative ex-Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson with Russian President Vladimir Putin has been recorded and is set to be made publicly available today.

Carlson said in a video announcing the interview that the video of the sit-down will be distributed for free on his website and on X (Twitter). Justin Wells, head of programming at Carlson’s streaming network, has also said that the interview will be made available today. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Carlson specified that it would be uploaded at 6pm EST (11pm GMT).

Carlson's decision to interview Putin is being viewed with suspicion as an attempt to align himself with Putin's agenda. Before his exit from Fox, Carlson repeatedly questioned the validity of US support for Ukraine following the Russian invasion, and he's wondered why Americans are told to hate Putin so much. His commentaries were frequently circulated on Russian state-run media.

In the past, Tucker Carlson has widely promoted conspiracy theories and far-right rhetoric including opposing abortion care, and has sided with the disgraced former President, Donald Trump, as well as with Putin on multiple occasions. After over a decade with Fox News, Carlson was fired in April and went on to launch his own streaming service where he has been conducting controversial interviews with prominent right-wing personalities.

In a video announcing the upcoming Putin interview this week, Carlson claimed that Western journalists had interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy multiple times but could not be “bothered” to interview the Russian president. His suggestions were rejected by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who said the Kremlin has received many requests from large Western television channels and newspapers which, however, "take a one-sided position."

Carlson’s position, Peskov said, "is in no way pro-Russian, nor pro-Ukrainian, but rather pro-American." Peskov, told reporters during a press conference that Carlson was chosen for the interview because "he has a position which differs" from other English-language media.

Carlson has planted himself on former President Donald Trump's side in a growing split in the Republican party over Putin and the Ukraine war. Trump has pushed to cut off aid to Ukraine, and the GOP majority controlling the House of Representatives has complied. While many Republicans are critical of the Russian president and his invasion, Trump and others have argued the United States has no interest helping Ukraine defend itself.

Carlson previously also interviewed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has fashioned himself into an icon for conservative populists across the globe and has been Putin's closest ally in the European Union. Orbán, in office since 2010, has long been criticized for overseeing an increasingly autocratic political system. The European Union, as well as the US State Department and numerous international observers, have alleged that Orbán has rolled back minority rights, seized control of the judiciary and media, and manipulated the election system to ensure his hold on power.
