Late Queen hated Princess Beatrice's original name - so Fergie had to change it

Back in August 1988, when Princess Beatrice was born, her parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson originally planned to call their eldest daughter something else entirely, but the late Queen Elizabeth reportedly didn't approve of their choice, so the couple quickly rethought what their child's name would be.

Her name was not announced initially, because the couple spent 11 days trying to find an option that the late Queen was happy with and when they eventually landed on Beatrice, it was actually a suggestion made by the monarch herself whilst the Royal Family was spending time together at Balmoral that summer.

The Sun reported that the name that Andrew and Sarah initially favoured was 'Annabel' but the Queen didn't like it much at all and quickly put the kibosh on it, reportedly declaring it "too yuppie".

The couple's second choice - Victoria - also wasn't favoured by the late Queen, the newspaper reported, and eventually, she herself put forward a suggestion: Beatrice, which everyone was happy with.

Christened Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, all of the names selected for the eldest York daughter had royal origins. Beatrice was the name of Queen Victoria's youngest daughter, Elizabeth was - of course - a tribute to her monarch grandmother, and Mary was the name of another Queen, the wife of George V and grandmother of Elizabeth II.

In recent years, since the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan's daughter Lilibet, there has been a lot of discussion about how much final approval the late Queen really had over the names of new royals and in particular, whether or not the late Queen Elizabeth approved of the use of her childhood nickname for her great-grandaughter.

A royal author - Robert Hardman - recently claimed in his new book that an aide told him the late Queen was "as angry as I'd ever seen her" over the couple using her nickname - however, this is something that has been consistently denied by the Sussexes themselves, with the couple even calling it defamatory and sending legal letters to the BBC back in 2021, when the broadcaster first reported the claim.

The issue over Beatrice's originally proposed name being so swiftly altered when Queen Elizabeth made her disapproval known indicates just how seriously her opinion was taken by the other royals as head of the family, and perhaps makes it seem unlikely that if she had voiced her displeasure the name would have been used.
