Martin Freeman leaves fans 'disturbed' over very racy scene with Jenna Ortega
Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega's new film Miller's Girl (2024) has attracted attention on social media following its release, namely because of an intimate scene between them.
The film, written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, was released last month in the US. Martin, 52, plays professor Jonathan Miller, who ends up in an "increasingly complex web" with his student Cairo Sweet, played by Jenna, 21.
The character Cairo, who seemingly describes herself in the trailer as an 18-year-old "languishing in the wilds" of a rural community, is given a writing assignment by Jonathan. She's understood to pen a story that he deems "inappropriate".
It's understood that scenes from Cairo's story are played out on-screen by Martin and Jenna. This is understood to include an intimate scene between the characters in Cairo's story, which has now prompted reaction on social media.
It shows Jenna, seemingly as a character from Cairo's story, bending over a bed as Martin's character moves his hand along her arm before leaning against her. Jonathan is seen reading Cairo's submitted script in the intercut scene.
Martin Freeman's cheeky comment to Alison Hammond leaves her in stitchesViewers have reacted to the scene, and the film in general, on social media platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter, in recent days. Sharing the clip on the platform last month, one person tweeted about it: "This scene is f-ing crazy."
Someone responded: "I feel very [weird] while watching this or it just me? Sorry but not sorry bruh!" Another person commented: "Disgusting AF." Whilst the scene in question from the new film has also been described as "gross".
Seemingly addressing the scene, someone else wrote on the platform recently: "[That] clip might be the worst thing I've ever seen." Another person tweeted in their response to one of the posts about it: "Wtf is up with this s***."
There's also been a negative reaction to the film itself, with one person saying: "I think I am finally done watching these age gap movies. They are all gross, and I am tired of it. No amount of [Jenna or Martin] could save this one for me."
Some people questioned why Jenna - who is best known for her role on Netflix's Wednesday and as a cast member in the Scream film series - would be involved with the film. Others however have defended the actor over the project.
One person tweeted in defence of Jenna recently: "She's an actress and that's her job." Another person wrote on the platform amid criticism: "People know she's 21 and she's and actress right? She's not [actually Wednesday Adams]."
"Apparently people are freaking out because Jenna Ortega kisses a girl in once scene, and assumes the doggystyle position with Martin Freeman in another. Like guys, it's a movie, she's acting. Chill," responded another person.
Amid criticism in response to the scene, one person wrote: "[People are] talking as if she were still a child and as if this wasn't literally just a cinematic scene." Whilst another viewer reacted: "Is this it? Twitter made it seem waaay crazier."
There has been some praise over the film, with one person tweeting: "Technically, it's a very well-done movie. Subject matter is very uncomfortable [though]." Another person wrote recently: "Jenna's performance [was] phenomenal."
Jenna spoke about her interest in the role during a Q&A at the Palm Springs International Film Festival last month. She shared whilst on the panel: "I feel like teenage girls are often written in the same bratty, no nonsense manner."
Amanda Abbington says she contemplated suicide after Martin Freeman split"[But Cairo's] so incredibly intelligent and appears so wise beyond her years that I think I was excited one, to not only be able to explore that, but then two, obviously the topic of the film is a little bit riskier. It's a scary thing to approach and obviously as an artist you want to take risks and explore what that could be," she further commented at the event.
Miller's Girl is set to be available to rent on-demand in the UK from February 19. A synopsis for the film teases: "A talented young writer (who's played by Jenna) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Martin) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web."
It further states about the plot: "As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear."
