King Charles' 'optimistic' gesture to Harry that shows 'thawing' relationship
King Charles gave an "optimistic" signal that his relationship with Prince Harry is thawing after delaying his trip to Sandringham.
Yesterday, Charles personally welcomed Harry after he flew in from California. The Duke of Sussex has dropped everything to come to the UK after learning of his father's cancer diagnosis. He landed at Heathrow Airport and was immediately taken to Clarence House to see his father. While their meeting may have been short - with reports saying only 30 minutes - their first time seeing each other in nine months is very significant.
Charles was due to take a helicopter to Sandringham but once he heard his youngest son was coming he kept it waiting to personally welcome him. Prince Harry was pictured arriving at Clarence House yesterday at about a quarter past three, having been driven straight there with a police escort following his 10-hour flight from Los Angeles. Then half an hour later, at quarter to four, the King and Queen were seen waving to crowds as they left Clarence House.
Sources told the Sun that Charles had made the “significant” decision to delay his travel plans after Harry flew at such short notice. While it was the first time the pair had met since Charles' coronation it is thought to have been the first time they met in private since Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
The source added: “He is very fastidious about time-keeping but it was significant that he delayed the flight to Sandringham when he knew Harry was visiting.”

There is cause for optimism.” It is not known if Harry will travel to Sandringham to see his father again. However, a second meeting between the father and son has not been ruled out - showing signs of a thawing relationship, the Daily Mail reports.
While Harry has managed to see his father, it doesn't appear likely he will meet his brother Prince William. The King personally called both his sons, as well as his siblings the Princess Royal, the Duke of York and the Duke of Edinburgh, to inform them of his cancer diagnosis last week, palace officials confirmed. Harry is understood to have agreed to delay his visit to the UK until a public announcement was made by Buckingham Palace on Monday evening. A source close to William said: “The prince’s main focus is for his wife, who is recovering from surgery, his three children and now his father. There are no plans for Harry’s visit to act as some kind of vehicle for reconciliation.”
Sources close to the Duke, who now lives in Montecito, California, have suggested he would have welcomed an opportunity to meet with William “if the opportunity were to arise”. A source said: “The Duke's primary reason to travel to the UK is to visit his father. If the opportunity were to arise to see the Prince of Wales then the Duke would have gladly accepted it.”
Yesterday, we reported that William's priority is looking after his wife Kate, who is recovering from abdominal surgery and is taking extended leave from public duties until after Easter, sources have said.
Today, William is expected to return to public work, carrying out an investiture at Windsor Castle in the morning and later attending a gala for the London Air Ambulance in the evening.
