Nestle has announced it will be discontinuing childhood classic chocolate bar Breakaway, along with Yorkie Biscuit.

Breakaway, which is made up of a crunchy digestive biscuit covered in milk chocolate and was first launched in 1970, will no longer be produced from March - meaning shoppers don’t have long left before it disappears for good. The Yorkie Biscuit is also being axed, but Nestle will continue to make the classic Yorkie bar.

Nestle said it wants to make room for new products, and has already announced a new Blue Riband Hazelnut bar. This is essentially like a regular Blue Riband, which has layers of wafer coated in milk chocolate, but with an added smooth hazelnut filling.

A spokesperson for Nestlé UK & Ireland said: “We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but it’s time for us to say goodbye to Breakaway. We have seen a decline in the sales of Breakaway over the past few years and unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.

“By saying goodbye to Breakaway, we can focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers’ tastebuds.” They added: “While we know it’s sad to see Yorkie Biscuit go, we want to assure shoppers that we have plenty of exciting new products lined up for 2024. Watch this space.”

It comes after Nestle devastated shoppers discontinuing Caramac, which was a caramel flavoured chocolate, after 64 years. Nestle said at the time: "Unfortunately we had to withdraw Caramac from our range as sales were relatively low. It was a difficult decision for us because we're proud of all our products and don't like to disappoint our consumers. We hope you can understand why we took this decision."

Nestle has also recently axed Animal Bars, which had two different named animals moulded on the surface, due to low sales. A spokesperson said: "I can confirm that Animal Bar is also being delisted due to the low performance of the product and a steady decline in its sales over the past few years."
