Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has confirmed that their star left guard, Joe Thuney, more than likely won't be able to play at Super Bowl LVIII due to a chest injury.

Thuney has been out of action since getting injured during the team's 27-24 win over the Buffalo Bills in the NFL Playoffs division round. Stepping up for him is Nick Allegretti who'd earlier filled his position against the Baltimore Ravens.

Praising Allegretti, the Chiefs' head coach Andy Reid said: "Allegretti is a guy that has started for us a number of games, and all the guys look at him like he's a starter. So everybody's got confidence that he can come in and do a nice job. Tough kid. Not everything is the prettiest thing that you've seen, but he's going to fight you right to the end. And he's smart, so, good combination."

Allegretti, who was picked by Kansas City in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, has already played 74 regular-season games and made 13 starts, and played every snap till the team's loss at the Super Bowl to Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.

Speaking about the upcoming Super Bowl LVIII with the San Francisco 49ers, Coach Reid mentioned that along with Thuney, running back Jerick McKinnon also may not play, although there's a small chance. "We'll see," Reid said. "I mean, I think it's a long shot."

Neither Thuney nor McKinnon had been able to practice before the big match. Thuney is top of the list for blocking in the middle of the field, according to ESPN, with his teammates Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith also in the top four.

Thuney, who was picked in the 2016 NFL Draft, has played in three Super Bowls in a row. Last year, he was in his fourth Super Bowl, winning with Humphrey and Smith against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Thuney says he's getting better "day-by-day," but can't say for sure when he'll be back playing. The Kansas City team has given McKinnon, their "secret weapon", 21 days to start practicing again, but he's not on the pitch yet. Coach Reid said on Tuesday that McKinnon hasn't been training with the team.

McKinnon couldn't play on Christmas Eve because of a groin injury just before the game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Clyde Edwards-Helaire took his place while he was out. McKinnon has only managed 21 runs for 60 yards and one touchdown this season because of injuries. But he's done well catching the ball, with 25 catches for 192 yards and four touchdowns.

In Super Bowl LVII, where the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35, McKinnon was really important. He caught three passes and ran four times, making lots of yards.
