The UK's cheapest supermarket for the first month of 2024 has been revealed - and once again Aldi has taken the crown.

The discount supermarket chain has continued its winning streak in Which?'s monthly price comparison - and it comes after it won Which?'s cheapest supermarket for 2023. Throughout the year Aldi was found to be the cheapest for 11 months, it lost its crown in October which found Lidl to be cheaper. Each month the consumer group compares how much supermarkets charge for a selection of groceries across the eight major UK chains.

Which? compared the price of 72 items this January and the total cost of those items at Aldi sat at an average of £129.24 across the month. Waitrose took the crown for UK's "most expensive" last month with an average price of £170.44 - this is 32% or a whopping £41.20 more than Aldi.

Fellow discounter Lidl took second place costing £3.13 more than Aldi with an average of £132.37. Asda was placed third with a basket price average of £145.75 followed by Tesco at £149.11, Sainsubry's at £153.50, Morrisons at £156.05, and Ocado at £157.15.

The comparison includes special offer prices but not multi-buys or loyalty discounts - this means prices through Tesco's Clubcard and Sainsbury's Nectar Card prices are not taken into consideration. Which? says that while there are discounts that can be made through these loyalty card schemes, they are only available to people prepared to sign up - this means it is not available to everyone.

Which? says its latest price analysis demonstrates that shoppers can make considerable savings on their groceries depending on where they buy their food. The consumer group has urged both supermarkets and the Government to do "everything they can" to support vulnerable customers. This includes ensuring cheaper budget ranges are available in local convenience stores and clear pricing on products.

Ele Clark, Which? retail Editor, said: "Our latest research has found Aldi held on to its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in January. With food prices continuing to put immense pressure on household budgets, it’s no surprise to see many people turning to the discounters, especially as shoppers could save 24% by doing so.”

Commenting on the findings, Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi, said: ‘’As families cope with the aftermath of Christmas coupled with ongoing cost-of-living pressures, we know that January is an especially tricky month. Therefore, we’re proud to have maintained our position as the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket, demonstrating our continued commitment to providing our customers with high quality food at the lowest prices.’’
