Dancing On Ice judge Oti Mabuse has revealed her baby spent six weeks in hospital after being born premature and the new mum battled a deadly infection after giving birth.

Oti, 33, who welcomed her daughter with 40-year-old husband Marius Lepure last year, described the hidden ordeal as "traumatic" as she revealed her newborn baby daughter was placed in an incubator with jaundice. Meanwhile, Oti was diagnosed with sepsis - a serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection.

The infection-fighting processes turn on the body, causing the organs to work poorly. Sepsis may progress to septic shock - a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs.

The Dancing On Ice favourite announced the birth of her baby girl on Christmas Day. However, she has now revealed that she actually gave birth to her premature baby in October. Oti's baby girl was already nine weeks old when she and her husband Marius decided the time was right to announce her arrival.

Opening up about her shock secret health battle, Oti described the experience as "traumatic" as she finally welcomed her "miracle" baby. Speaking on the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, Oti said: “We announced the baby when she was nine weeks. We just wanted to take time for ourselves. She was very premature. She came really, really early. Unexpectedly premature, which was a big, big, big shock."

"Going through all of that emotional trauma that you go through when you have a premature baby and for six weeks being in the hospital with the little one and then finally coming out and having her home with friends and family over Christmas was really, really nice," she added.

New mum Oti, who has yet to reveal her baby daughter's name, revealed that her newborn was in a "critical condition" when she was born, and Oti was later diagnosed with sepsis. “She was in a critical condition really for the first six weeks and me and Marius just really wanted to be there mentally, physically, emotionally. My mum stopped everything and flew directly to England just to be with us," she explained.

“Things don’t always go to plan, especially when you have a little premature baby. You give birth, you hug and then the baby gets taken away. The next time you see them they’re in a box and they’re wired up and they’re not well or under blue light and it gets traumatic. You have to get over giving birth and then get over, ‘Oh I’m not walking out of here with my baby. We’re going to stay here for a while’," the new mum added.

Lifting the lid on her sepsis battle, Oti explained: "It was this moment of, I’ve been through this amazing birth, which was incredible. It was serene, it was happy and it was everything that I wanted. The last bit was not what I had wanted.

“You see your child for two minutes and then they get taken away by a group of ten midwives and doctors. That’s when things start to change and start to hit you. I think we didn’t hold her for about a week because she was still in an incubator with the wires, and with jaundice so she was under blue light. And she had infections because it turned out that I had sepsis.”

On Christmas Day, the former Strictly Come Dancing star took to Instagram to share a sweet snap with her husband Marius and the latest addition to their family. At the time, she wrote: "Merry Christmas. Wishing you all a wonderful festive season and special memories with loved ones." Oti, Marius and their Christmas baby were all wearing matching festive pyjamas while their gorgeous dog looked on.

Oti previously revealed that they had been "trying to conceive for a while". The new mum first shared her pregnancy news live on ITV's Oti Mabuse's Breakfast Show. Hugging her husband, Oti told viewers the couple had been "holding in some good news".

With a smile, she said: "Speaking of things that you didn't know at home, we have a little something for all of you, we've been holding some good news. We're having a baby!" She went on to say her "beautiful journey" is "nearly over", joking that "Christmas is about to get even louder".

Oti had told her Instagram followers: "Our 'yes' year is getting better and better and so is our little family. We feel finally ready and excited to share our wonderful news. This is new for us scarier than swimming with sharks, jumping off cliffs or even swinging from bridges but the best news we could have ever ask for."
