Eight million households will start to receive the third and final cost of living payment worth £299 from today.

It is the last instalment in the £900 cost of living package, with the previous payments worth £301 and £300 having already been sent out to eligible UK homes. There is currently no further payments scheduled after this. You can still be entitled to the final payment even if you didn't receive the first two cash sums.

The £299 payment is being sent to people who were claiming one of these benefits between November 13 and December 12 last year. If you claimUniversal Credit, you must have been eligible for a payment for an assessment period ending between these dates. The full list is as follows:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Pension Credit

There may be some examples where you won't receive the payment - for example, if your Universal Credit is reduced to £0 in the eligibility timeframe. You also won't be entitled if you claim Tax Credits and your entitlement for the tax year is below £26.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is sending the payment out between February 6 and February 22. If you claim Tax Credits only from HMRC, you will be paid at the slightly later timeframe of between February 16 and February 22.

The payment will be made automatically into your bank account - so you won't need to apply to receive it. The payment will show in your bank account as your National Insurance Number followed by DWP COL. The HMRC payment reference will be HMRC COLS.

If you start claiming benefits and your claim gets backdated to the timeframe we've mentioned above, then it is possible you might be entitled to the cost of living payment. For example, you can backdate Pension Credit by three months and the deadline to do this, and be entitled to the £299 cost of living payment, is by March 5.

Mel Stride, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said: “The economy has turned a corner, and with inflation falling we are providing millions of the most vulnerable households with another significant cash boost. Our fair approach to welfare is underpinned by a belief that the best way to secure long-term financial security is through work.

“This is why we have cut taxes for over 27 million working people and have launched a £2.5bn Back to Work Plan to help thousands more people off benefits and into jobs.”

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said: “Our decisive action helped to more than halve inflation last year while building the foundations for long-term growth through sensible tax cuts, which will help people’s money go further. But the legacy of Covid and the ongoing Ukraine war has meant the last few years have been tough for many, which is why we’ve provided one of the largest support schemes in Europe worth £3,700 for the average household.”
