King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace has revealed, in the latest of a number of health troubles that have hit the Royal Family so far this year.

The monarch's shock health news, announced on Monday evening (February 5) follows his treatment for benign prostate enlargement. However, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King hasn't been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The Royal family have been dealing with numerous health-related issues recently - from the Princess of Wales still recovering from abdominal surgery to Sarah, Duchess of York dealing with skin cancer. Here's the full timeline of the health issues that have recently troubled the Royal family

Tuesday January 16

The Princess of Wales is admitted to the London Clinic for abdominal surgery, which the Palace say was pre-planned, and not related to cancer. She is currently recovering and will take up to three months to return to public facing duties.

Wednesday January 17

A statement from Kensington Palace is released and announces the Princess' operation. She will remain in the private hospital for up to two weeks, and isn't expected to return to public duties until after Easter. Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales steps back from his official duties temporarily to care for his wife and children.

While the exact nature of her condition is kept private, it is not cancerous - with Kensington Palace saying the planned procedure was successful.

The very same day, at 3.25pm, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles is to have treatment for a benign enlarged prostate, and will be admitted to hospital in a few days. Later, a source says the Princess is "doing well."

Thursday January 18

The Prince of Wales spends time at his wife’s bedside, driving himself away from the back entrance during the low-key, private visit. Meanwhile, The Queen says the King is “fine” and “looking forward to getting back to work” during a visit to the Aberdeen Art Gallery.

Friday January 19

The King heads to his Sandringham estate in Norfolk with the Queen from Scotland, in order to rest ahead of the procedure.

Sunday January 21

The King's former sister-in-law, Sarah, Duchess of York shares that she has malignant melanoma, a form skin cancer. It has been less than a year since the 64-year-old Duchess was diagnosed with breast cancer, and had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Monday January 22

The Queen tells 86-year-old well-wisher Jessie Jackson that the King is “fine”, and thanks her for asking, while she carries out engagements in Swindon. On Instagram, Sarah, Duchess of York, meanwhile, describes her shock at having skin cancer but says she is in “good spirits" and "grateful for the many messages of love and support."

Tuesday January 23

The Princess of Wales has now been in hospital for a week. Meanwhile, an insider told The Sun: "The Queen has told him he needs to slow down a bit."

Thursday January 25

The King carried out behind the scenes official duties, meeting academics from Cambridge University at Sandringham House. He then arrived back in London from Norfolk ready for his treatment.

Friday January 26

The King, with the Queen at his side, is admitted to the London Clinic for treatment for an enlarged prostate. He also visits the Princess of Wales, who is recovering in the same hospital.

Monday January 29

The King is discharged from hospital and waves at well-wishers. The Princess of Wales leaves the clinic the same day to continue her recovery at home.

Wednesday January 31

The Queen said the King is “getting on, doing his best” as she opened a Maggie’s cancer support centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Sunday February 4

The King and Queen attend church in Sandringham. The King is photographed waving at well-wishers.

Monday February 5

Kensington Palace confirms the Prince of Wales is returning to official duties this week, beginning with an investiture. However, at 6pm, Buckingham Palace announced the King has a form of cancer, which is not prostate cancer. He has started treatment from today. The statement also said he will not carry out public-facing duties, but will carry on with behind the scenes state business and official papers.
