Adam Thomas has given an update on his arthritis battle, admitting he is ‘suffering’ and feeling down.

The 35-year-old soap actor was shocked last year when he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune and inflammatory disease which causes the body’s immune system to attack health cells by mistake. He received his diagnosis not long before he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing - which he performed on alongside 34-year-old professional dancer Luba Mushtuk in the 2023 season.

Adam has updated fans and social media followers about his health battle in the months since. And in a new update, he confessed his condition was getting him down and revealed he was testing out a new treatment.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, the actor shared a string of photos of himself looking upbeat in a medical facility while receiving treatment. He shared snaps of himself in a chair having blood removed, and also revealed he was being prescribed methotrexate to try to aid his symptoms.

Opening up to followers, he wrote: “Little update on my arthritis journey so far… So been In and out of hospital for a while now, tried all sorts of medications and painkillers. But nothings really working, so time to try something new.

“Today I had steroid injections, which really helped ease the pain and inflammation last time, so hopefully it will do the same, until my prescription arrives for the new medication. I Will be trying a disease modifying drug which I will then take (if it works) for the rest of my life or until I go into remission.”

Adam then confessed: “It’s been a long and hard battle and as of yet nothing has worked, but I’m hopeful! I’ve suffered just over a year with arthritis and I have to say it’s been the toughest period of my life to date. I’m a firm believer of everything happening for a reason, but I don’t really have the answer to that just yet. If I’m being completely honest… I’m suffering…I don’t think i want to suffer in silence no more.”

Reacting to the post his fellow Strictly competitor Krishnan Guru-Murthy wrote: "Take care Adam – sending lots of love x." A fan commented: "Lots of love to you Adam!! Turning your pain into power!"

And a further fan declared: "I think you should be so proud of yourself for talking about your illness and how you are feeling and dealing with it, sharing may help many people to talk about their own story and no be ashamed of the illness especially if they are of a young age! Keep being strong and positive and more importantly lean on your amazing family who all can see love you sooooo much."

In September last year, Adam shared details of his arthritis battle with the Mirror for the first time. He said: “I put on a brave face but it’s been difficult to keep that persona up. Emotionally and physically, it’s had a huge impact on my life this year… I was so fit and I was actually training for a CrossFit competition in January.

“I just never saw this coming and I didn’t know what was happening to me. I was like: ‘Can someone just give me an answer as to what is going on.’ The pain was such that I couldn’t even walk down stairs and I could just stay in bed all day because it can be quite severe. I could have good days and bad days, but on the bad days, it was really, really bad.”
