A coastal city with 300 days of sunshine a year is the best place for solo travellers to visit.

A new study of where to stay alone conducted by Wizz Air has put the Greek city of Rhodes at the top of the rankings. Over 75% of solo-traveller reviews gave the destination five stars, while its attractions and restaurants also scored very highly.

The city has a long waterfront where cruise ships visiting the island pull in and vendors can be found selling delicious Greek treats. It is a lively place, but not one that is overwhelmed by crowds, although it does get busy during the peak summer season. There are a number of beaches a short walk away from the centre or you can head into the medieval old town to discover stories of crusaders and knights.

Once you've walked around the towering byzantine walls of the 13th century fort in the city, drop into the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and view an incredible floor mosaic which was transported whole across the sea to be installed in its current position.

Rhodes at large has bounced back well since it was hit with wildfires in the summer of 2023. The Mirror visited two weeks after the blaze and found that much on the island was running smoothly again, despite stretches of hillside turned black in the runaway fire.

Like with many other parts of Greece, hospitality is an enormous part of the culture on the Dodecanese island. If you are travelling alone, restaurateurs will be more than happy to give you a table and then lavish you with not only delicious food, but likely also their company.

Rhodes is a huge tourist destination, with 2.6million people visiting the island of 125,000 locals each year. That means it is well catered for handling visitors of all varieties and needs, as well as being a hub of international travellers where you're never far from an interesting chance encounter.

Another strength of Rhodes when it comes to solo travel is that it is quite cheap. If you're able to be flexible with dates, there are direct flights from Manchester and London airports this March and April for less than £40.

There are plenty of hotels in the city which are affordable even if you're not splitting the cost in two, including the Manousos City Hotel which is currently advertising rooms from £25 a night.
