Neil Warnock is set to be named Aberdeen manager but once did not even receive a reply to his application for the role.

The 75-year-old has been out of work since he departed Huddersfield Town in September 2023. Aberdeen sacked boss Barry Robson last week after a year in charge of the Scottish Premier League side.

Warnock could be in the Pittodrie hotseat in time for the Dons' trip to Rangers on Tuesday. Peter Leven took caretaker charge of the club over the weekend and earned a draw with Celtic.

The former Cardiff City and Sheffield United boss will take the reins in eighth position but a point away from the top six and already in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup where Aberdeen face Bonnyrigg Rose.

The veteran manager has put his name in the frame take charge in the Granite City previously however. Ahead of putting in his application he asked former Sheffield United player Laurent D'Jaffo his verdict on the club.

Warnock told the Sacked in the Morning podcast: "I applied for the Aberdeen job once. I didn't even get a reply which I thought was really bad manners.

"I had a lad called Laurent D'Jaffo playing up there. When I was going to apply he said 'oh gaffer, yeah come on'.

"So I said to him, 'what's it like up there?' He went 'Gaffa it's the only place I know where the Seagulls never land. It's that cold if they landed they'd never get off'.

"I never forget that. They obviously didn't want me, they never replied."

Warnock came out of retirement to take charge of Huddersfield in February 2023, almost 30 years after first managing the club. The Yorkshire-born boss guided them to Championship survival and was rewarded with a one-year contract extension before being replaced just three months later.

Speaking earlier this season, Warnock suggested he would be available rather than returning to retirement. He said: "My health is good, I've never felt better.

"If anything I've got the buzz again. You don't know what the next knock on the door is going to be. I'm sure when February comes round people will be asking me again."
