A bus driver who died following a serious assault at a station in Moray, Scotland has been named by police.

Keith Rollinson, 58, died at Dr Gray’s Hospital following the incident at Elgin station on Friday evening. A 15-year-old boy - who cannot be named for legal reasons - has been arrested and charged in connection with the assault. He is due to appear at Elgin Sheriff Court on Monday.

Detective Inspector Gavin Fleming, of Aberdeen CID, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Keith’s family and we are providing them with support at what is a very difficult time for them. They have asked for their privacy to be respected.”

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach North Scotland said earlier: “We are shocked and saddened by this news, and our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of our driver who has sadly passed away. Safety is our number one priority and incidents like this are extremely rare. We are doing everything we can to support our colleagues and our driver’s family as well as assisting the police in their investigation.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene of an incident at a bus station in Elgin, Moray, at around 10.40pm on Friday evening. Paramedics took the driver, a 58-year-old man, to hospital but he could not be saved.

Speaking of the attack, a Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Around 10.40pm on Friday, 2 February, 2024, police were called to the St Giles Road area of Elgin following a report of the assault of a 58-year-old man. Emergency services attended, and the man was taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin where he later died. A 15-year-old male youth has been arrested in connection with the incident and inquiries are continuing."

Tributes have poured in for Mr Rollinson from family and friends on social media. William Stevens wrote: “An absolute gentleman. I was short for the fare home from Aberdeen once on the last bus with my kids. This absolute hero allowed us to travel on the promise I went to a newsagent and bought water etc for the kids journey with the money I had. Thank you Keith, you made a long journey bearable. RIP shine bright.”

Meanwhile, his work colleague Paul Walton wrote: “Had the pleasure of working with this gent. Was on break with him just hours before on Friday night. Absolutely devastated. Rest in Peace Keith you will be greatly missed.”
