Women's screams heard as man shot near pub and police appeal for information

Investigations are underway after a man was shot near a Liverpool pub last night, with locals saying they had "never heard anything like it."

At around 10:30pm last night a man arrived at a Merseyside hospital with a gunshot wound to his ankle after a shooting close to Cookson Bridge Pub in Litherland. The injury is not life-threatening and he is not cooperating with police inquiries.

One local who was there last night told the ECHO that he had “never heard anything like it” as he recalled women screaming and the sound of glass smashing. He added that a policeman was stationed under the bridge all night long.

Merseyside Police are appealing for information following the incident and have urged anyone with information to get in touch. Chief Inspector Phil Thompson said: "The investigation is in the very early stages as we seek to establish what has taken place and who was involved.

"We have a large police presence in the Litherland area to carry out a number of lines of enquiry and I would encourage people to come forward and tell us what they know. There is no room for guns on the streets and we will do everything we can to find the person or people responsible for this incident and bring them to justice."

Aside from the Litherland shooting, investigations are continuing another man was arrested for a second shooting in the eastern Liverpool neighbourhood of Old Swan on Monday.

There was also a stabbing last night on the outskirts of Liverpool in Garston. At around 4.30pm on Monday, it was reported that a man entered a flat on Haslingden Close and shot a 50-year-old man. The victim was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital via air ambulance with a serious gunshot injury to his face. He remains in hospital in a critical condition. A 25-year-old from Liverpool has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody where he will be questioned by detectives.

At around 7pm on Friday, officers received a report that a man had been stabbed on the corner of Thomas Close. The victim, who is in his 50s, was taken to hospital for treatment with a serious injury to his chest which is not life-threatening. Officers are at the scene and searching the area. An investigation is underway with CCTV and forensic enquiries are being carried out in the local area.
