McDonald's is renowned for its cheap and cheerful burgers - but fans have slammed the unaffordable prices at one branch.

It's no secret that the price of a Maccies has risen, gone are the days of a 99p cheeseburger or mayo chicken, but people have been gobsmacked when they saw the price of one McMuffin.

A photo of a receipt was uploaded by a dissatisfied diner who was astounded when they were charged an eyewatering amount for the popular breakfast items and people slammed the "appalling" prices. The hungry diner had ordered two Egg McMuffins, setting them back £11.50 ($14.58) and a Bacon and Egg McGriddle for £5.70 ($7.19).

The breakfast order receipt showed the price of the items which were slammed on X, formerly known as Twitter. The post read: "$7.29 for one McDonald's Egg McMuffin. What has the world come to?? These were 2 for $2 pretty recently."

The McDonald's, on Round Hill Road in Fairfield, Connecticut, US, also charged $17.6 (£13.90) for an Egg McMuffin, hash browns and a small coffee meal, as shown in a separate tweet on X from an Uber Eats screenshot.

It also charges up to $3 (£2.40) for upgrades and additions like a fresh-cracked 'round egg', bacon and a larger coffee and charges $5.69 (£4.50) for hash browns additionally.

However, people came to defend the prices, as one X user explained that this particular McDonald's was at a service station and prices will "always be inflated there". The social media user said that was true, but that it was still "outrageous pricing" for McDonald's.

They penned: "Usually avoid them like the plague, but every now and then it's the only option for kids who want an Egg McMuffin and need to get to their sporting event on time. And every time it happens, the price is appalling."

One person advised how you can get a cheaper meal and stated: "You made several rookie mistakes. Never buy from rest stop. Get the McDonalds app. There's a MCD in Fairfield right off the exit 22. The app has a buy one get one free deal on breakfast sandwiches."

According to the McDonald's website, their franchises can "set their own prices".
