A man accused of beheading his father and showing it on camera was on the run for hours after sharing the video on YouTube - but what actually happened in the period before he was caught?

In the highly distressing video, titled ‘Mohn's Militia - Call to Arms for American Patriots’, Justin Mohn ranted about the “traitorous” Biden administration, referred to himself as a militia leader, and called for people to pick up arms against the government. “America is rotting from the inside out as far left, woke mobs rampage our once prosperous cities,” he says in the video.

He then described his father, Michael Mohn, a federal employee of around 20 years, as a “traitor” to his country who would “burn in hell” - before showing what appeared to be Michael’s decapitated head on camera. “America is rotting from the inside out as far left, woke mobs rampage our once prosperous cities,” he says in the video.

What happened after the video was recorded?

After Mohn put the video online, he went on the run, taking his father’s car to drive around 100 miles away. Middletown Township Police were dispatched to the scene at around 7pm after being called by Michael Mohn’s wife. “When officers arrived, they located the male deceased in the bathroom,” a statement from the prosecutor's office reads according to CNN. “The victim’s adult son was not present when police arrived and left the area in his father’s vehicle.”

A large kitchen knife and a machete were found inside the bathtub, a probable cause affidavit states. It adds: “Officers also located the deceased male’s head inside of a plastic bag which was inside of a cooking pot in a first floor bedroom next to the bathroom.” They found clear rubber gloves with “what appeared to be blood on them”, and confirmed after watching the video that “the gloves, decapitated head, and room are the same as depicted in the video”.

Mohn was later taken into custody at the Fort Indiantown Gap base, the headquarters of the Pennsylvania National Guard, just after 9:25 pm. According to Department of Military and Veterans Affairs spokesperson Angela Watson Mohn “was armed at the time but did not resist arrest”.

But throughout that time, the video remained available on YouTube. Reports suggest it was uploaded at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday (January 30) and not taken down for six hours after that - seemingly long after it would have been flagged by the authorities. The video was posted to 115 subscribers and garnered over 5,000 views in the hours before it was taken down.

When asked why it took so long to take the video down, YouTube declined to answer directly and instead responded with a statement, which read: “YouTube has strict policies prohibiting graphic violence and violent extremism. The video was removed for violating our graphic violence policy and Justin Mohn’s channel was terminated in line with our violent extremism policies. Our teams are closely tracking to remove any re-uploads of the video.”

But it was taken down far too late to avoid it circulating widely, with some clips of the video even available on X (formerly Twitter ). Mohn is currently being held without bond and is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and other charges.
