Cinemas are notoriously pricey, particularly in regards to beverages and nibbles - so what are the rules around bringing in your own food and drinks at UK cinema chains?

For years, smuggling food and drink into cinemas has felt like a crime however this urban legend has been debunked several times. Food is a huge revenue spinner for them so ideally, cinemas would prefer you to spend your cash with them but over the last few years, chains have openly confirmed that you are allowed to bring in food and drinks. However, even if this is the case there are certain rules you need to follow.

Here we have rounded up all the rules UK cinema chains have regarding food and drinks for the next time you fancy catching a flick.

Vue

Vue has 92 venues throughout the UK and Ireland and does not allow customers to bring any hot food or any alcoholic drinks from outside the cinema. The cinema chain's website says: "if film fans would prefer, they can bring in their own cold snacks and non-alcoholic drinks". This means you should be able to bring in cold snacks like crisps, sweets, and sandwiches when you go to watch your film.

Odeon

Odeon, which has 280 cinemas across Europe, also allows you to bring in your own bits when you go and watch a film however, the cinema chain says it does not allow heated food, alcoholic drinks or "pungent" food to be brought in from outside the cinema. If you are unsure if your drinks and snacks fall into one of these categories then Odean advises you to ask a member of staff at your local site.

The chain does note on its website that its Odeon Islington Luxe & Dine site in London does not allow you to take your own food. This is because this site offers you a dining service with a choice of "specially selected meals" such as burgers, fries, chicken strips, hot dogs, pizzas and salads.

Showcase

Showcase is a smaller chain and has just 16 cinemas in the UK and the rules at this chain are pretty similar to others. According to its website, Showcase says it does not allow customers to bring "hot food, alcoholic beverages and drinks in glass containers" into its cinemas. The chain says it "reserves" the right to refuse admission if people are found to be bringing in prohibited snacks.

Cineworld

According to its website, Cineworld has a "strict" no hot food or alcohol policy. The cinema chain says it has the right to "refuse customers entry" if you have hot food or alcohol bought from outside the premises. Cineworld says all of its cinemas display the "necessary signage advising customers of this policy". The cinema chain has around 128 sites in the UK and the Republic of Ireland - which operate under the Cineworld and Picturehouse brands

Everyman

Everyman cinema chain, which has around 40 sites across the UK, is different to the others as it actually has a blanket ban on customers bringing in their own snacks into the cinema screens. According to its website, the chain says: "Please note that only food and drink bought within the cinema is allowed to be taken into the screen."

The chain says it sells a "range" of hot and cold, savoury and sweet snacks in our fully licensed bars in all of its venues. The food sold at Everyman includes things like burgers, hot dogs, and pizzas as well as sharing platters of tempura prawns, salt and pepper squid, and baked camembert. It also sells sweet treats such as cakes, ice cream, cookie dough and milkshakes.
