Gemma Atkinson and her fiancé Gorka Marquez have fuelled split rumours after admitting that they prefer spending time apart from one another.

The confession comes amid reports that there's trouble in paradise for the couple, who fell head over heels while appearing on Strictly Come Dancing. Former Hollyoaks actress Gemma, 39, who shares two children with Gorka, 33, said that being apart from the Spanish professional dancer so much keeps their relationship 'fresh'.

In recent weeks, Gorka has been spending a lot of time away from his family after landing the role of a judge on the Spanish version of his beloved Strictly Come Dancing. The show, called Bailando con las Estrellas, requires him to spend most of his time filming in Madrid.

While Gorka is working his dream job in Madrid, Gemma has been caring for their two young children, daughter Mia, 4, and six-month-old son Thiago, in Manchester. And in recent weeks, there has been ongoing speculation that the distance between Gorka and Gemma has been too much on the couple and has caused trouble in paradise.

However, former soap star Gemma has now set the record straight, admitting that when it comes to her and Gorka, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Gemma feels that being away from Gorka so often keeps their romance 'fresh' and alive as she shut down split rumours. Speaking to OK! Magazine, the star said 'she does and she doesn't' when asked if she missed Gorka while he's away filming in Madrid.

"Part of the reason why it still feels so fresh is because we’re not together 24/7. In February, we’ll be six years [together], with two babies, and I still get excited to see him, but I think if we were together all the time, I wouldn’t. I miss him, but I also think it’s a good thing because it keeps the spark alive," she explained.

During the interview, Gorka agreed with his fiancée Gemma as he explained: "Yes, for example, we have different jobs and we do different things, even though it’s kind of within the same industry. But then we come together, and in a way, it keeps the relationship alive and gives you a freshness."

Last week, former Hollyoaks star Gemma appeared to have slammed any speculation about her engagement and insisted that she and Gorka are more than happy. The star told her Instagram followers that she was making the most of the "peace" while Gorka was away from home.

Addressing the speculation, she said: "Yes we did see them stories. There was a few floating around weren't there which is news to us. It is what it is, isn't it. Happens all the time dunnit. It's not true." Gemma, 39, went on to say: "I think it's because it was made out he's working away a lot. He goes away Friday afternoon and comes back Sunday mornings.

"He's hardly bloomin' overseas is he. Crikey it's less than 48 hours if anything it gives me a bit of peace at weekends. No offence Gorks. Well, he is overseas but you know what I mean." Gorka is currently sitting as a judge on Bailando con las Estrellas, the Spanish version of Strictly and is spending a lot of time in the capital, Madrid, for filming."
