For most people, going up and down the stairs at home is something they do day and night without a second thought. But one dog owner brought social media users to tears after sharing the sad story of her beloved pet's death and the heartfelt tribute she left behind.

TikToker Sharblivin posted a video of her staircase, over some gentle acoustic music, that began: "These old stairs needed a refinish so badly. But you see, there was this." The clip then focuses in on one especially worn out step.

She went on: "This was his step. And this day, last year, in that very spot he put his head on my lap and went to forever sleep." During this moment, she shared photos of her gorgeous golden retriever resting on the step in question as well as at the bottom of the stairs.

The video then showed the repainted stairs - but with a gold plaque seen on one step with the engraved words 'Max 08.31.10 - 01.20.23'. She carried on: "I did paint the stairs. I do love them. But I could just not bear the thought of covering up that step. So now it's forever his."

Around 450 people responded to the clip, with many in tears over the emotional video. One user said: "I'm not the only one crying. We all are crying. This is the sad reality for every dog owner. I wish we could be with our dog forever," and another was taken by surprise, writing: "I never anticipated that plot twist. It caught me off guard and brought tears to my eyes instantly".

One simply stated: "I'm a wreck now, thanks" and another: "It’s 6:30 am. Why did I watch this? I am sobbing." Elsewhere, some users were keen to share their experience of losing their dog, as someone added: "My senior dog passed away last Thursday and now I’m ugly crying again. RIP Sammy. RIP Max."

While another user whose dog died recently explained the pain they are going through: "Our little one went to sleep 2 days ago after 15 years. It hurts so much, and the thought of the final moments keeps playing in my head. We’re so lucky to have spent the time we did with her, we thought we were protecting her but really she saved all of us over those years."
