The love story of Kate and Prince William has been closely watched by royal fans since they first went public nearly twenty years ago, and while the Waleses' romance might seem like the stuff of fairy tales, it hasn't always been plain sailing between the pair.

In the earlier stages of their relationship, the royals were widely reported to have broken up a couple of times, although they got back together relatively quickly. The second of these breakups took place in 2007, and after they had split up, Kate was reportedly left furious at William's antics "cheapening her image".

The claim was made in a 2007 report by the Mail on Sunday, which alleged that after William was caught not once but twice - in quick succession - getting up close and personal with women in nightclubs, Kate finally had enough.

William first got snapped in a "drunken embrace" at one of his favourite London haunts, Boujis. Shortly afterward, when he was on a night out in Bournemouth, photos of William dancing on a podium with another woman were published in the newspapers. The Mail on Sunday reported that according to one of her pals, Kate didn't hold back her displeasure at his behaviour.

"She has coped for years with girls flinging themselves at her boyfriend and for a while she found it humorous and even flattering. But after his recent behaviour she gave him an ultimatum and told him that every time he behaved like that in public he was cheapening her image as well as his own.

"She told him she wasn't prepared to be treated like a doormat and that his carefree behaviour was affecting her image. She gave him quite a pasting. In the past she had always let go of things like that, but this really bothered her," the anonymous friend was quoted as saying at the time.

It wasn't long before Kate and William got back together, and within the next three years, they were engaged and walked down the aisle in 2011 in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey that was watched by millions.

Over a decade of marriage and three children later, the on-again-off-again period of their romance might be ancient history, but it shows that when Kate puts her foot down, it makes an impression.
