Katherine Ryan's wild past as she admits she'd let teen daughter do Love Island

Katherine Ryan has revealed she would let her teenage daughter go on Love Island – as she wouldn’t get into trouble like her.

The comedian praised 14-year-old Violet for “valuing herself way more than I did at my age” and said she “doesn’t need to warn her about anything because she won’t make the same mistakes I have”.

Now a mum-of-three, 40-year-old Katherine has opened up on the kind of things she got up to when she was just a few years older than her eldest child. At age 17, she was dating a 31-year-old man almost twice her age. She also admitted “doing all kinds of dangerous things”, including sleeping out in fields and getting into random cars.

But she has faith that Violet won’t follow in her footsteps and be a bad girl like her. With Violet potentially heading for a TV career, as she is set to star alongside her famous mum in new show Katherine Ryan’s Parental Guidance, she reckons she is more of a girl next door type – like Dani Dyer, who won the 2018 series of Love Island with ex Jack Fincham.

Speaking to The Sun, proud mum Katherine gushed: “She’s headstrong, she knows her value, she’s really good at speaking up when she thinks someone is being exploited or that something is unfair, and she’s got great boundaries. Even the best kids rebel against their parents. So unlike me, she’ll probably be something like an electrical engineer.

“If she wanted to get into TV, I wouldn’t be against Love Island. She’d be the Dani Dyer type. It will probably be one of the safest places for a teenager to be in a few years because of the safeguarding on that show. Hopefully, I’ve given her enough support and self-esteem that she wouldn’t want to be an attention-seeking performer like I am. I can imagine her just there to prop the other girls up, say all the right things and be a sweetheart.”

Katherine has been open about her own experiences with predatory men in the industry, but says she isn’t worried about Violet. She added: “Right now, she’s not bothered about being on camera, she’s so unaffected by it all. She’s part of this generation of young women really advocating for themselves – and I don’t need to warn her about anything because she won’t make the mistakes I have. Luckily, I think she’s also inherited by Teflon sensibility when it comes to criticism.”

In her new series, Katherine and husband Bobby Koostra, who are also mum and dad to younger kids Fred, two, and one-year-old Fenna, investigate extreme parenting techniques after Katherine came under fire for her own ‘controversial’ parenting, such as potty training her kids at eight months and being an advocate of co-sleeping.
