Two children have been left orphaned after their entire family was killed in a brutal car crash in Oklahoma last weekend, it has been reported.

Aldo Fernandez and his wife Marisa Sanchez were driving in their Honda Civic down Interstate 35 in Love County, Oklahoma — a county bordering Texas that's about 100 miles (161km) north of conjoined cities Dallas and Fort Worth — when they struck or were struck by a semitruck that was barreling down the highway near them.

Local TV station KXII reported that the crash occurred just before 6:30pm local time on Jan. 20, causing all southbound lanes of traffic on the busy interstate to grind to a halt as the authorities worked the scene well into the night and the following morning. The outlet reported that it occurred around mile marker 24, which means they were 24 miles north of the Texas border, which appears to be just next to Lake Murry State Park.

The cause of the accident wasn't immediately known, but it was later determined that no one in the vehicle had been wearing seatbelts. The parents were both pronounced dead at the scene, KXII reported, as were their 1-year-old and 4-year-old sons Calvin and Sebastian, respectively. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol told the outlet that their injuries had been severe.

It remains unclear whether 17-year-old Aldito and 14-year-old Yitzel were in the vehicle when the crash occurred, but what is clear is that now both are orphans. And Ali Dolatabadi, their uncle, is raising money through a GoFundMe page to cover the funeral expenses for the family and to help raise the two orphaned children.

"Their passing has left an unimaginable void in our family," Dolatabadi wrote on the page. "Aldo and Marisa left behind two kids, Aldito (17) and Yitzel (14). We are asking family, friends, and the community to help us with donations, if possible, to help cover their funeral costs. We are grateful for any donation and/or prayer. Sharing this post would also be greatly appreciated. In the case of the fundraiser exceeding the goal, all donations will go towards the future of Aldito and Yitzel."

The goal was originally set for around $25,000, reported KXII, but it has now received nearly $78,000. "We are deeply touched by all of the donations and messages we received and are continuing to receive. It truly means the world to the families involved, especially the surviving kids. This is a testament as to how much Aldo, Marisa, Sebastian, and Calvin touched and impacted their family, friends, and community," Dolatabadi wrote in an update on Jan. 26 — not more than 5 days after the fundraiser was established.
