'Tobacco apologists have ignored the lethal power of vape marketing'

Right time to get puff

Banning disposable vapes is a step in the right direction when the devices are clearly pitched at young people.

So too is prohibiting versions with flavours such as strawberry and brightly coloured packaging that appeal to children, with manufacturers accused of cynically pitching their dubious products at young people.

The sorry tale of vapes is an innovation hailed as a way of weaning smokers off cigarettes becoming a potentially dangerous addiction of its own, ensnaring people who would never have smoked.

Apologists for the tobacco industry who claim vaping should be of no interest to whoever is in government are guilty of ignoring the lethal power of marketing and advertising, vaping mis-sold as cool and a free choice.

We don’t yet know the full threat posed by vaping but we can bet our last penny that it won’t be found to be fully safe in future years.

Dial down Don

Trigger-happy Donald Trump is a World War Three disaster waiting to happen, a short-fused presidential contender who has zero judgment.

Ranting there would be no conflict in the Middle East or that he could immediately resolve Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, presumably by pressuring Kyiv to surrender territory, are the delusions of a chancer who will do anything to get back in the White House.

Political and military leaders need to dial down the rhetoric, including inflammatory talk of returning to conscription in Britain, and suggestions that war and the mass slaughter of hundreds of thousands, potentially millions, of citizens are likely in the near future.

Talking is better than fighting, particularly when it would avert unimaginable deaths.

Royal smiles

Our very best wishes to King Charles and to the Princess of Wales after their time spent in hospital.

We all know how hard it is to fight back after illness and we hope their recoveries are swift.
