A man proposed to his girlfriend in the middle of the street after staging a fake gunpoint robbery.

A car is seen approaching a T-junction in broad daylight. As it slows down, a pedestrian and two men on a motorcycle block its path. As they yell “Get out” at its occupants, two more men arrive on a bike. The couple are marched out of the vehicle as one points what looks like a concealed handgun at the woman. The group continue shouting at the couple as two men in helmets force the man to kneel on the tarmac. The others hold the woman in front of him and suddenly stop shouting as the man pulls out a ring.

The woman puts her hands over her mouth in disbelief as her boyfriend pops the question with a wide grin on his face. She then jokingly smacks him as she gets emotional. The men break into applause as the couple share a tender kiss in Cali, Colombia on Saturday.

The daring proposal was filmed by an onlooker and dubbed "The best proposal". Local resident José said: “As if she’d say no.” Theodore added: “You have to love someone wholeheartedly to be with them in health and sickness, in kidnappings or robberies.” Another remarked: “The more exciting the better, but this is crazy.”

Julio said: “He almost gave the girl a heart attack, and he would have been left without a girlfriend.” And another reflected: “She took it so casually that I don’t know whether to worry about the country’s situation or think it’s fake.” Cali has a reputation for being one of the more dangerous cities in Colombia.

In Scotland last year, a botched public marriage proposal left a town in stitches after the recipient left a reply to her suitor. Forgoing the traditional down on one knee, the unlucky in love person put up a large white bed sheet in Elgin, Scotland this week which read: “Will you marry me, Rachel?” Hopes for a love story straight out of a rom-com were quickly dashed however when someone - presumably Rachel - replied with her own bed sheet alongside the first.

While the first was full of love, the second was considerably less so. People were left in stitches when the reply read: “No!!! You slept with my brother.” The unfortunate reply presumably has put any dreams of nuptials off for the foreseeable future.

Local Garry Jamieson said of the public spat: “So who is the lucky Rachel? I hope she said yes.” Leni Roy joked: “Was wondering if her brother will give his blessing.” And Susan Ritchie added: “Who said romance was dead.”
