Stars In Their Eyes legend Matthew Kelly left everyone shocked as he says he goes by a stage name - and he's called David.

He left long-time friend Denise Welch stunned when he told her the truth on his Good Morning Britain appearance on Monday. The 73-year-old hosted the popular singing competition from 1993 until 2004, says he has always stuck with Matthew but decided it was time to reveal all.

Speaking on the ITV programme, he said: "I am very proud to be the Matthew in the 'Tonight Matthew I'm going to be...' but it's not even my real name, it's not my real name. My real name is David!" The Loose Women panellist, who had a stint on his famous show, was shocked at the news.

She said: "I didn't know that!" to which he replied: "Did you not know that?" Denise then joked: "Tonight Matthew, I'm gonna be David." The pair got close when she played Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street before she was convinced to appear on a celebrity version of Stars In Their Eyes.

It's not the only confession he has made. The popular presenter says he was almost killed on the set of the karaoke competition by a falling disco ball. He had to be evacuated from the studio after disaster struck as he approached the stage, where a contestant was about to rehearse their disco hit.

“As I stepped onto the stage, this giant mirror ball fell from the ceiling and smashed into a million pieces at exactly the spot where I would have been standing two seconds later,” gulped Matthew. “It would have killed me. We were all dismissed from the studio. I said, imagine the papers the next day: ‘Matthew Kelly killed in terrible glitterball tragedy. It’s the way he would have wanted to go.’”

Matthew quit ITV in 2004 to concentrate on the stage, leaving behind his Mr Light Entertainment tag. Promoting a new theatre production of Sleepless, he said: “My time with that [television] has gone. Of course." He added: “They've run all the Stars in Your Eyes on Challenge and Dave. They ran it dry so the viewers know who the contestants are going to be now. It is like ‘We know who you were going to be – and you weren't any good’.”

Asked about the state of television these days, Matthew said: “Well, I suppose we have had a great chance to watch things that we missed the first time around. Hasn't TV always been like that? Repetitive. It has always been ‘Oh Friday and Saturday night... there is nothing to watch. It does not bother me."
