A 25-year-old woman has been critically injured in a horrifying shark attack.

The woman was pulled from the water in Sydney Harbour after suffering nasty bite injuries to her leg and "major blood loss" after being savaged by one of the creatures. Disturbing images have emerged showing blood stains and bloodied clothing on harbour decking near to the scene of the attack.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in the Elizabeth Bay area of Sydney at around 7.45pm. Paramedics were seen working on the victim before carrying her away on a stretcher for further care, while it's understood that a nearby vet sprung into action and used a tourniquet to help stem the bleeding.

Local media reports she was then airlifted to St Vincent's Hospital in the city where she remained in a critical condition on Monday. A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance Service said: "She had serious bleeding. Her injuries are severe.

“We have a helicopter there and multiple units treating her at the scene”. While shark attacks on humans are uncommon, there are concerns climate change could impact the figure.
