A newborn baby has been found in the toilet of a pub with police now carrying out an urgent search for the mother.

The tiny body of the girl was discovered at the Three Horse Shoes, in Oulton, near Leeds, yesterday. Detectives today appealed for the mother of the baby to step forward or seek medical help.

West Yorkshire Police said it was investigating a “tragic” incident. The pub was said to have been busy with customers for its carvery Sunday lunch when the grim discovery was made at around 4.45pm. The baby was confirmed as deceased by paramedics at the scene.

Police have stressed their priority is to ensure the mother’s welfare DCI James Entwistle of the Major Enquiry Team, said: “This is a tragic incident and we are urgently appealing for the mother of the baby girl to contact us or seek medical help as she has been through an extremely traumatic ordeal and could well need treatment herself.

“If the mother is comfortable speaking to the police then she can do so by calling 101 or she can use LiveChat online to talk to us remotely at Live Chat | West Yorkshire Police. Our enquiries into the incident remain ongoing today with NHS partners but our main priority remains the mother’s welfare and safety.”

One woman who lives neighbouring the pub, who did not want to be named, told The Mirror: “It’s absolutely tragic. I only saw the news this morning while working from home and was shocked. I’ve only been to the pub a few times. The community is devastated.”

The pub last night apologised to customers on Facebook. A post read: “I’ve been writing post after post for the past hour but I don’t think right now is the best time given the circumstances…. We’re sure there’s speculation of something that happened at our establishment this evening. All I can say at the minute is I’m sorry to everyone that was in with us during the time this happened and to all that was due to come in and couldn’t.

“A massive thank you to those that helped us whilst we were struggling as a team it really doesn’t go unappreciated. Lots of love Team Three Horse Shoes.” Staff were said to be “visibly upset” by the discovery but continued to work in “clearly distressing circumstances”.

Lee Connor told the pub’s staff on Facebook: “You were absolutely amazing and everyone understands that you will need time to process and be with your friends and family to offload what was a nightmare of a situation." And Nicole Connor commented: “The staff all did amazing to somehow manage the toughest situation they could face without causing alarm and panic amongst the customers, which isn't an easy feat given the situation.”
