Do you put your eggs in the fridge? According to one 'egg expert', there isn’t one definitive answer, as where you’re located has a direct bearing on what you should do. It certainly seems like a chicken and egg situation, as different countries have different rules, but do you know why?

According to a TikTok video from @alanstheory, if you live in the UK it’s likely you don’t refrigerate them, but if you’re US-based, then you should. He said: “If you live in the USA, Australia, Korea, Japan or Sweden then yes, eggs go in the fridge. But, if you live in the UK, Italy, France or Russia, then you don’t need to keep them refrigerated.”

He then explained that the reason why was all down to one word: Salmonella, which he described as: “a bacteria that can make you very sick, or even kill you.” With this in mind, it seems different countries have different methods to ensure people don’t catch the potentially fatal bacteria.

He continued: “In the USA, the eggs are washed before they are sold, this works, but by washing them, they lose their natural protective layer, so that’s why you have to refrigerate them, so that no other bacteria can get in.” However in Europe and the UK it’s a different salmonella story: “Instead of washing the eggs, they vaccinate the chickens against Salmonella, so European eggs don’t need to be refrigerated," he said.

He then settled the salmonella dilemma with a plea, saying: “If we would just listen to each other, we might realise sometimes everyone has a valid point. Empathy starts by understanding that everyone is right from their perspective.”

The revelation sent viewers into a spin, with one asking urgently: “Literally every other country where do we put them?” while one highlighted that if you were leaving them out of the fridge: “It depends on room temperature too.” One USA chicken owner proved you should never put your eggs all in one basket, saying that their shop-bought eggs went in the fridge, but the eggs from their chickens remained on the counter.
