Drivers who are looking for bit of excitement may find metal will freeze to their face on one of the 10 most dangerous roads in world

A challenge is always a task worth attempting, some believe, even on scenic routes when tight bends narrow the way ahead and winds threaten to push your car off the edge. These are just some of the dangers facing drivers on of 10 of the world’s most dangerous roads.

Stelvio Pass- Italy

This Italian pass comes down in a zigzag over many miles. It is one of the highest passes in the European Alps and won an accolade in 2008 from Top Gear, for its 48 hairpin turns. It may not be the most dangerous, but is the most winding and is incredibly difficult not to be distracted by its Alpine views.

Sichuan-Tibet Highway- China

The road starts in Chengdu of Sichuan in the east and ends at Lhasa in Tibet. It may take around 15 days but those braving the route will witness region’s majestic peaks and picturesque landscapes. The Sichuan-Tibet Highway has, however, claimed many thousands of lives and death could come after one mistake. Rock avalanches and landslides are just some of the difficulties on the route.

Atlantic Road- Norway

This road has been named the best drive in the world and is one of the most scenic. It is home to the Storseisundet Bridge and has an approach like a ramp in the sky. Motoring fans say its location on the edge of the Norwegian Sea sees waves often crash over the road in stormy weather, making this a roller coaster of a trip.

Zojila Pass- India

This is a crucial link between Ladakh and Kashmir and often closes in treacherous conditions, shutting off Ladakh from the world. It has huge steep drop and the narrow roads have no barriers. The road is a graveyard of overturned buses, crashed cars and local livestock. It is at high altitude and you are likely to experience heavy snowfall to high winds.

Siberian Road to Yakutsk- Russia

This road goes straight through Siberia and temperatures fall so low glasses are not advised as the metal will freeze to your face. It passes mountains, forests, deserts and in summer turns to mud when driving conditions become an issue. Its mud swallows cars but is the only route which leads to Yakutsk. The route is also isolated, so survival supplies are vital. The road is the only route where the coldest temperature has ever been recorded outside Antarctica.

North Yungas road- Bolivia

Around 200-300 people fall to their deaths on this road every year, but it is one of the most popular among backpackers. With a width of one car there are no guardrails against falls of up to 2,000 feet. Visibility is also affected by fog, dust clouds and rain which also come with mudslides and waterfalls. The North Yungas Road has been named the Death Road and was labelled the ‘world’s most dangerous road’. An alternative route has since been built and it has lost its danger road title.

Skippers Canyon Road in the south west is 16.5 miles built by miners more than 140 years ago. It is so dangerous car insurers won’t pay out if you drive on it. But it has incredible views and excellent photo opportunities. It is made from gravel and is extremely narrow with hairpin turns, high elevations, steep grades and winding and narrow roads. The road will test driving ability because of its remote location and bad road conditions

Fairy Meadows Road- Pakistan

This dangerous mountain track is an unstable gravelled road which is made treacherous by its high altitude and narrow turns. The lack of guardrails and barriers means vehicles can easily plummet off the cliff and is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Keylong Kishtwar Road- India

This road has a vertical drop of thousands of feet so should be avoided on a windy day. Stunning mountain views can be seen among a host of scenic views. Wind and rain can make the route muddy and slippery and a challenge even in a four-wheel-drive.

Bayburt D915- Turkey

This 66-mile-long Bayburt D915 has 29 hairpin bends coupled with with no railings or barriers. Dangerousroads.org called it 'the most dangerous road in the world' . Parts of the route are closed in winter because of snow blizzards and other treacherous weather conditions. There is no room for error and Bayburt highway is used by locals driving all sorts of transport. It has been described as a true 'highway to hell' claiming numerous lives every year.
