The BBC are 'urgently' seeking to hold talks with Huw Edwards to discuss his future.

According to sources, the corporation is reportedly "preparing for a busy year of news". The 62-year-old was suspended from his role six months ago following claims he paid for sexually explicit images from a teenager. But the Metropolitan Police decided to take no further action after speaking to the alleged victim and their parents. In a statement, the force said: "Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have now concluded their assessment and have determined there is no information to indicate that a criminal offence has been committed."

Meanwhile, a lawyer representing the young person stated that "nothing inappropriate or unlawful has taken place between our client and the BBC personality."Edwards had been at the BBC for over three decades, where he worked his way up the ranks to become a senior news anchor at the esteemed organisation.

He was a chief presenter on programmes such as BBC News at Six, and Weekend News before he was axed from the role and was among the highest-paid journalists at the Beeb, pocketing a salary of between £435,000 and £440,000 a year.

Although the BBC is reportedly intent on discussing matters with the newsreader following the revelation back in July, it has been said that the newsreader is 'unfit' for discussion, after being suspended and seeking help for his mental health.

Edwards was admitted into hospital after his wife Vicky Flind had named him as the presenter at the centre of the scandal, which was first reported by The Sun. According to his wife, Huw, who has struggled with his mental health in the past, had sought medical attention after having suffered a 'serious episode.'

Flind revealed that Edwards was receiving in-patient care and would remain there 'for the foreseeable future', adding that he would respond to the allegations when he had recovered. According to one of Edwards' longstanding colleagues, the BBC would be keen to resolve the situation with Huw as they struggle to find a chief news presenter to replace him.

A source told The Times: "The BBC would like to get this whole unhappy situation wrapped up as quickly as possible, particularly with the possibility of a snap election looming and the situation about who will present it. Things have been dragging on for six months now and they still haven’t been able to make any progress."

However, in previous reports, two anonymous BBC sources shared that the BBC had no plan to give Huw his old job back. A newsroom insider also told the I in November: "The review is in and unfortunately, there is no expectation he will return."

It comes as the BBC readies itself for a busy year of news which includes several elections, huge sporting events, and the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine. However, bosses struggling to find a replacement for Huw and someone who should cover the general election on their channels. Mastermind host Clive Myrie has been tipped as the news presenter who could front the BBC's election coverage.

A BBC spokesperson said: "As we have previously said, we will not be discussing matters pertaining to Huw Edwards, and we would urge people not to indulge in speculation."
