All eyes in the football world could be on one of the most unlikely places tomorrow as Bayer Leverkusen play Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

The popularity of German football in the UK is sizeable, with fans primarily loving the fan culture of the German top division, however tomorrow's Bayer Leverkusen game could be one of great interest to Liverpool fans especially following the announcement that Jurgen Klopp is to leave the Reds at the end of the current Premier League season and amid rife speculation that the next man in the Anfield hot seat could be on show during this game.

Leverkusen are enjoying a season to remember with former Liverpool, Real Mardid and Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso at the helm and his impressive form in charge of the Germans has seen him linked with some of the biggest jobs in Europe, and now with former club Liverpool. With 18 games played, Alonso has Leverkusen sitting at the summit of the Bundesliga with 48 points, four ahead of league giants Bayern Munich and an incredible 14 points above third placed Stuttgart.

The job Alonso is doing is even more impressive when you consider that Bayer Leverkusen could be on the cusp of winning the title having finished as runner-up in the Bundesliga five times without ever winning the competition, which is a record in German football. If any Liverpool fans are in doubt as to Alonso's pedigree or just how his team plays football then they could do a lot worse than look at last week's huge clash in the Bundesliga between Leverkusen and RB Leipzig.

Leverkusen clinched the points after a memorable 3-2 victory that saw Piero Hincapie net the winner in the 91st minute. As well as the dramatic victory over Leipzig, Leverkusen have also beaten Union Berlin 4-0 and held Bayern Munich to a 2-2 draw this season.

So, despite Alonso's own comments in his press conference on Friday, in which when asked about the Liverpool job the former Spain international said: "I am very happy at Leverkusen with my players at the moment. [It was a] big surprise in Liverpool, of course — for what Jurgen did in Liverpool I have great respect and admiration." There will be a number of avid viewers wondering if Alonso is the man to take Liverpool into a new era.
