When it comes to hands-on fatherhood, Prince William is said to take a more 21st century approach.

The royal is making sure he "doesn't leave it all to the nanny" as Princess Kate rests up following abdominal surgery. Kensington Palace shared the news in a statement last week that the 42-year-old would be off royal duties until at least Easter after the procedure.

But with Kate recuperating, William will be making sure nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo doesn't have her hands completely full as she helps with the raising of George, Charlotte and Louis, according to royal expert Robert Hardman. The author of The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, told People magazine the couple are keen to ensure their three children have as normal an upbringing as possible.

“We know they are a very tight family unit, and he wants to be there for them,” he told People Magazine. “So much of what they do with those kids is about normalizing life and not making them feel like they are in a special gilded cage.”

Prince William cleared his calendar to be by Kate's side and put their family first, visiting the hospital every day since the surgery, according to The Sun. The royal is also currently off duties to attend to his wife and carry out the school runs.

The raising of Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Louis is the couple's top priority. All three currently attend Lambrook School, with talks of George expected to next enroll at Eton to continue his studies when he's 13.

It's thought the royal children have yet to see their mum while she recovers from surgery at the London Clinic where she is said to be "doing well", having been at school during her stay while spending Sunday being looked after by grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton.

Kate is usually a hands-on mum who does the school run, attends her children's school events and gets stuck in with activities. But according to HELLO!'s royal editor Emily Nash, Kate's stay in the hospital won't stop her from keeping up to date on what her children are up to and offering them comfort when needed.

She explained: "Kate loves FaceTiming the children when she is working away overseas so I'm sure they will be in regular contact while she's in the hospital, and the kids will be keen to see her as soon as she's well enough. She loves having her family around her so will be looking forward to getting home and having cuddles with the kids.

"Both William and Kate are very hands-on parents – they take the kids to school, attend sports matches and concerts and try to be home for bedtime as much as they can. While Kate is in hospital, William will be at home keeping things as normal as possible."
