Simon Thomas has been reminded that Eric Dier is multilingual by fans after the Sky Sports presenter mocked the Bayern Munich defender's German accent in an interview.

Dier, 30, joined the German champions from Tottenham earlier this month after falling down the pecking order in north London. The versatile defender made his debut for Bayern in their 1-0 win over Union Berlin and spoke to Sky Germany after the match.

Thomas, who replaced Jeff Stelling as the host of Soccer Saturday last year, picked up on Dier's accent and reacted on social media, posting: "Absolutely magnificent. That embarrassingly common habit of thinking a terrible accent equals a valiant attempt at speaking another language."

However, it was quickly pointed out to Thomas that Dier, who grew up in Portugal, can actually speak four different languages: English, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

Thomas was far from the only person to take note of Dier's accent, though, as other fans joked about the interview, which took place on Wednesday night.

The result means Bayern have cut Bayer Leverkusen 's lead at the Bundesliga summit to four points as they chase down Xabi Alonso's unbeaten side. The win meant even more for Dier, who shared his pride at making his official Bayern bow.

He said post-match: "[It was] a very proud moment for me obviously to make my debut for this club. It's a very proud moment for me and my family and obviously I really enjoyed it.

"I really enjoy playing here and I'm happy to have made my debut here at this stadium. So I'm really happy with how I've settled and obviously to make my debut and hopefully, I can continue to help my team."

Dier spent just shy of a decade at Tottenham after joining the club way back in 2014 but has been a peripheral figure since Ange Postecoglou was confirmed as the club's new head coach in the summer.

Prior to his move to Germany, Dier had made only four Premier League appearances for Spurs this season, starting just once. In moving, he has linked back up with former Spurs talisman and England captain Harry Kane, who moved to Bayern in a £100million deal in the summer transfer window.
