An expert has revealed how to keep your green-seeded fruits fresher for longer - saying some techniques are better than others. Author of Lebanese Cuisine, Samira Kazan, has been testing out five avocado storing hacks on social media to help those looking to keep their 'avos' looking clean and green.

Known as @alphafoodie on TikTok, she said the first hack was storing avocado in water in a glass container with a lid, however, she was quick to point out that while the avocado stayed green, she was put off by the health aspect of adding it to water, with research showing storing it this way can encourage bacteria growth and in extreme cases, even lead to food poisoning.

Her second hack was avocado and citrus juice, where she showed how simply squeezing some lemon or lime to the cut surface of an avocado and wrapping in cling film to refrigerate was a great idea: “I 100% like this one, after a few days it maintained its green colour too,” she said. Hack number three was her least favourite, which was storing cut avocado alongside a cut onion in a glass container with a lid: “This whole thing is wrong definitely wrong, the entire thing smells of onion.”

Her fourth hack showed her cutting an avocado into slices, removing the skin and the pit and adding to a freezer bag: “This one can be used in smoothies and other recipes – this is great in my opinion,” she enthused. The last hack showed her freezing pre-made guacamole into ice cubes: “I like this one,” she said. “It maintained the colour, and although it was slightly watery, it wasn’t bad.”

After asking her followers which one they liked most, they were quick to comment, with one saying she was sorry to hear she didn’t like the avocado in water trick: “I thought that one was the best!” Another offered their own avo advice, commenting: “Avocado in oil and cling film works best for me.”

One viewer said unopened avocado can be kept fresher for longer placed in cold water in a tin and kept refrigerated, while another commented that the cling film was an unnecessary step: “You don’t need cling film, any citrus, including vinegar, and leaving it open in the fridge is fine.” One shared her own secret family avo trick: “You should try using an empty avocado shell to protect the other side and put it in the fridge. That’s what my mum taught me!”
