Barbie fans urge Ryan Gosling to reject his Oscar nomination in solidarity for his female colleagues

As Ryan Gosling publicly showed his fury that his fellow Barbie female colleagues were snubbed for Oscar nominations, many fans are calling for the actor to show his solidarity by rejecting his nomination and boycotting the awards altogether.

This week the actor, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken in Barbie, expressed his outrage that The Academy failed to recognise the women that created the feminist film. While Ryan's fellow co-star America Ferreira did earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, both Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were snubbed for nominations as many were certain they would be recognised in the Best Actress and Best Director categories.

While Ryan publicly bashed the award show for not recognising the women that were the driving force behind the widely successful film, many believe he stopped short in showing his solidarity. Barbie fans are now calling for Ryan to take action by withdrawing his name from consideration from the prestigious awards in order to truly make a statement.

In a statement Tuesday, Ryan wrote: "I am extremely honoured to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honoured and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken."

"But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, reacting to Ryan's words. And while many rallied in support of his message, many are asking him to take it a step further. One fan wrote: "Listen I’m not TELLING Ryan Gosling what to do, but if I were, I’d tell him to pull a Julie Andrews and decline the nomination in solidarity with his snubbed colleagues! #Oscars2024." Another agreed: "It would be a powerful statement if he withdrew his name from consideration." And a third wrote: "I hate to say this, but the only thing for Ryan Gosling to do in this case is decline the nomination. this is the only true way for him to support the director Greta Gerwig, & her work for which he was acknowledged by the Oscars."

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton even spoke out on Margot and Greta's shocking Oscar snub sharing her own praise for the talented ladies. The famous politician took to X, writing: "Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie."
