Haven't you heard? The clean girl aesthetic of 2023 is out. A new trend sweeping social media is the so-called 'mob-wife aesthetic' - think style inspired by Connie Corleones in The Godfather, Carmela Soprano and Adriana La Cervas in The Sopranos or even one of Joey Tribbiani's seven sisters in Friends. It's a look that's even caught the attention of Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, who took to Instagram last week to say: "I hear the 'mob wife aesthetic' is making a come back."

For those unaware of these iconic characters and their style - and haven't seen it plastered all over TikTok (it has had over 500 million views) - the #mobwifeaesthetic is bringing big, bold and beautifully-brash back in style, taking inspirations from the 80s and 90s.

As it sounds, this look is inspired by the fashion of the wives of gangsters in films about America's Italian mafia. These women were powerful, strong and made a clear-cut statement with their wardrobe. Now, fashion and beauty-lovers want to recreate the look - including celebrities like Taylor Swift, Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa and Jacob Elordi's girlfriend Olivia Jade.

The features of this look tend to include voluminous hair, floor-length vintage fur coats (even better if its leopard print), leather-look tops or trousers, makeup that is far from shy and subtle; we don't want quiet luxury here - go for smokey eyes, bright red lips, gold jewellery - and lots of it.

Weighing in on this new trend, skincare and beauty brand Beauty Pie's expert Nicola Moulton explained: "Drawing inspiration from the iconic aesthetic showcased in timeless movies and TV shows such as "The Sopranos" and "Goodfellas", the Mob Wife aesthetic is all about embracing audacious, messy glamour. Think silver smoky eyes that command attention, vampish lips that leave a lasting impression, and hair that's larger-than-life but slightly off-kilter."

She added: "It is a celebration of unapologetic brazenness, a departure from the demure looks that have dominated recent beauty trends. It's a bold statement that refuses to conform, encouraging individuals to embrace their inner power and confidence."

Now, while this look tends to give off 'expensive' designer vibes, what we do best here is find you affordable high street options. And that is exactly what we're going to do to help you achieve this look from head to toe.

First off, you need to get yourself some red nail varnish, like this French CanCan gel from Mylee (£8.99), or go for a square French tip, and a bold red lipstick - Charlotte Tilbury's Love Bite, £27, will do. When it comes to make up, TikTokker Dorothy Mannine - who said this look reminded her of her own family - explained how a messy smokey eye that's not too dark and eyeliner, £5.99 are your best friends for this look. "A nice messy, brown black smokey [eye]. The beauty of this look is you can be as messy as you want.

"We don't want to make it too dark, as that would imply a lot of effort. And this is a no effort effort look. The eyeliner is really the star of the show here. Make it messy." For a mix of eyeshadows - browns, blacks and sparkles - we love Huda Beauty's Pretty Grunge Eyeshadow Palette, £62.

As for the complexion, Dorothy says: "You want to be covered but you don't want it to look like you've got make up on. They always just look like it's their skin, but they look flawless." Using some concealer to even out redness and hide dark circles under the eyes, like this NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, £25, she added a matte powder (this one is £12.50) because "they are matte girlies. None of that glowy sh*t here."

Adding "lots of bronzer" is the next step (Charlotte Tilbury's £45 airbrush bronzer is award-winning), after which you're done. Now the lip colour that perfects this look has been up for debate. With some stating the eyes are the main event and having a dark neutral lip - like brown - others declare a bold red lip will finish off the look. We think either works and will leave you looking fiery and fiesty enough to pull off this style.

When it comes to the wardrobe, you should start with an all black base. Preferably with some leather in there - "the more you look like you're going to a funeral, the better" is a like often heard on fashion influencers' TikToks explaining this look. You don't need this to be OTT - a black fitted top like this £14.99 one from New Look, leather leggings like these (£25) from M&S and some heeled boots like these Jeffrey Campell Darleys from ASOS (£108) will work.

Layer that with a plethora of gold jewellery that includes some hooped earrings (these are £175 from Missoma) and rings, stick your hair in some curlers to make it as big as you can or get a big bouncy blow-dry and top it off with a big fur coat, such as this £79.40 one from eBay or the animal print number for £114 from Warehouse.

This black faux fur coat from New Look is also perfect for helping you achieve the new trend - and you can get it for only £14.
