Firefighters have been battling overnight a huge fire that broke out at a pub on a street in Northumberland.

Fire crews were sent to The Castle pub in Ashington on Monday evening following reports of a fire. Dozens of firefighters have been seen tackling the fire, with huge flames and thick smoke seen billowing into the sky above the town.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) sent five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform to the scene, and were joined by other emergency services personnel. A second aerial ladder platform was also sent to the street. Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area, while road closures are also in place, ChronicleLive reports.

A statement from NFRS said: "Fire crews are currently attending a fire at a property on Woodhorn Road, Ashington. Five appliances and an aerial ladder platform are in attendance alongside other agencies. Please avoid the area at this time. Thank you."

Fire service tell people to avoid the area

Firefighters are telling people to continue avoiding the area as they tackle the blaze, in their latest update.

Crews from Northumberland Fire & Rescue were using a second ladder due to the force of the fire that also required road closures.

The fire service tweeted: "We've a second aerial ladder platform on route to the fire on Woodhorn Road #Ashington. A road closure is also in place. Please avoid the area at this time. #StaySafe. #ThankYou."
