Buttering a slice of toast is something we all do without much thought behind it - but experts have revealed it can shine a light on our personality type.

Whether you spread butter evenly over your bread for a full coverage, leave little melted puddles around or spread and avidly avoid the crusts, your buttering habits can reveal "hidden layers" of our personalities according to a body language expert.

Human behavioral researcher Darren Stanton claimed that people fall into different categories based on their spreading method. The expert from Nottingham, partnered up with the plant-butter brand Flora to reveal the different spreading types and their unique traits.

"In the seemingly mundane act of putting a spread on toast, layers of our personality are unveiled. Some spread with precision, others with spontaneity — how we spread mirrors our resilience, patience and attention to detail," he said, as reported by the New York Post. So next time you subconsiously spread your butter - think about what it might mean about your character traits.

First up are the gliders. This was the most popular technique, and out of the 2000 people quizzed, 50 per cent were fans of the method. Gliders - as explained in the name - glide the knife over the toast for an even coating of butter. So, according to Darren, gliders have a "calm" and "easy-going" nature.

It seems as if they go through life unbothered by "obstacles or stressful moments" and can stay calm when those around them are shocked. They are also good listeners and are quite unproblematic.

Next up are the total coverage spreaders. Only 19 per cent of the people quizzed were in the full coverage team and this method is where the butter is spread right up to the toast edges.

But what does it mean for their personalities? Darren stated these people are "methodical" and "precise". They're usually the most organised among their friends and typically the one to plan group activities in advance. This habit also "shows control" as leaving any part of the toast uncovered is "half-finished" to them.

Clumpers are another group of spreaders, and these people will leave clumps, or puddles, on the toast. Only 6 per cent of people are clumpers and Darren said these toast fans are "in their own world" and will do things "their own way".

Clumpers are usually quite "scattered" and are most likely to be late to appointments as they "think they have more time" and will "think outside the box". These people don't care about their spreading and are just happy to eat toast with butter on.

Next we have crust-avoiders. These people are neat and tidy, but there was only 5 per cent of them in the group. They are "procedural" and don't make a mess. They most likely call themselves "perfectionists" and are organised. These are worlds away from the douber side spreaders.

People who butter both sides are the "most unique" out of them all. They are described as "creatives" who use both parts of their brain. Usually extroverted and "centre of attention". Darren added that they're extravagant and "live life to the fullest". They make their own decisions and are never a "follower".

Tear-and-spread is another method, and these are the people who generally don't enjoy surprises. They will tear pieces of bread and butter as they go, as they don't want to "accomplish less than they know they're capable of". They prepare what they are going to eat and then add the butter.

These people are used to "breaking things down" and have "different thinking skills" to others. They're usully good communicators and "build trust" with others. Darren shared that these people are "fun" and "outgoing".

Next is a curler. Curlers are people who use a gadget to spread their butter. Another "perfectionist" type person, they use a tool to make life easier and want to do things in a "unique way" and most likely have good "street smart" knowledge.

Barely there spreaders are those who prefer minimal butter and enjoy the taste of the bread more so than the butter. These people want to spend "minimal time" on their breakfast and want to get it over and done with. Darren explained these people as "outdoorsy" and "go-getters".

They live in the moment and "often satisfied" with what they have accomplished. They may also be "health-consious" and could do this for "dietary reasons". In contrast to this, there are the butter lovers and the do-you-want-toast-with-your-spread people.

These people pile the butter on and don't hold back. They love to "indulge" and enjoy life without limitations. By putting a lot of butter on, it shows they are generally "very happy" and see the "best in life". Darren added that they're "open minded" and big characters who "guarantee a good time".
