Locals have been left confused after road painters spelt the word 'SLOW' backwards on the tarmac.

Kim Cooper-Grindley was amused to find the warning in a reverse on a street in Penge, south London. She said it was not helpful to motorists who spotted the sign in their rearview mirrors after they had driven past the back-to-front warning.

She said: "Why would you need to go slow looking in your rearview mirror, you've already passed? It happened on Monday 15th January at approximately 11.30am. But they have not returned." Kim joked: "Our concern is that there will be hoards of people visiting to see the famous WOLS, it will become a Penge tourist attraction like Barnard Castle."

The road painters did not return to correct their mistake later in the day sparking sometimes tongue-in-cheek responses from others in the area. Members of an online neighbourhood Facebook group were scratching their heads as they discussed whether the road painters had made a mistake or not. Comments suggested it was "for testing your eyesight?" or "testing if you can read back to front". Another person made fun of the reverse lettering saying: "Owls down - it may all wrok uot fine in the edn."

The error followed an incident in September 2022 when Brighton road marking painters went straight to the bottom of the class - after spelling the same word wrongly. Contractors had daubed 'SHCOOL' outside Portslade Aldridge Community Academy in Brighton sparking amusement among parents.

In another incident reported by The Mirror workers also misspelt 'school' after repainting a road they had resurfaced outside a Swansea primary. Parents who turned up to collect their children from Llangyfelach Primary School yesterday (April 25) were quick to notice that the word had instead been spelt 'shcool'.

A father who took a photo of the glaring faux-pas posted it on Facebook along with the suggestion that whoever was responsible should pop into the school for a "couple of English lessons". The snap has since had hundreds of likes and comments, with many equally as dumbfounded as to how it could have happened.

One person joked in reply to the post saying: "Should be made to write it out 100 times," While another person who responded added, "OMG, you can’t make this up. Surely there were others with the person who painted it? Why didn't they spot it either?"

"Just embarrassing," said a third person. Even Swansea Council was quick to comment in order to establish that it wasn't responsible for the mistake.

A spokesperson for the local authority then told WalesOnline "We've looked into this and it's a mistake by Wales and West Utilities after they had carried out some work in front of the school. They are returning to correct the errors."
