It has been claimed that Princess Lilibet is "the real casualty" amid the fresh royal drama surrounding her own name.

It was recently claimed by a royal author that the late Queen was "furious" over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's daughter being named after her.

According to writer and author Robert Hardman's new biography, Charles III: New King, New Court, he writes how an anonymous aide recalled to him that "Elizabeth II had been 'as angry as I'd ever seen her' in 2021 after the Sussexes announced that she had given them her blessing to call their baby daughter 'Lilibet', the Queen's childhood nickname".

He wrote: "The couple subsequently fired off warnings of legal action against anyone who dared to suggest otherwise, as the BBC had done. However, when the Sussexes tried to co-opt the Palace into propping up their version of events, they were rebuffed."

In 2021, when Princess Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth "was not asked by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about naming their daughter Lilibet," as per a Palace source. This followed a statement that was released announcing Lilibet's birth and name.

In a statement released two days after the birth, a statement read that "the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world."

The statement went on: "Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales."

And since the name row was brought back into the limelight amid the new book about the King, Newsweek's podcast Royal Report has addressed the royal fallout. Speaking on the podcast, Jack Royston has spoken of his worry that Lilibet is the real casualty.

"On the other side of all this you've then got Princess Lilibet. This isn't just about Harry and Meghan, this is about their daughter too, and she was a newborn baby at the time, and she's only two years old now. She is going to have this name for the whole of the rest of her life," he said.

He added: "Because this whole saga leaked in the media, she will always have a little shadow of doubt, or when she's old enough to hear about it, she will always have that little shadow of doubt over whether the queen actually did want her to have that name, or whether she was furious about the whole thing.

"I can see where the upset might have come from," he concluded. "But of all the things Harry and Meghan have said and done, like this does seem a little bit like it's just picking on a newborn baby," he went on.
