Jodie Comer on 'thinking about motherhood' and having a new maternal instinct
Actress Jodie Comer has hailed the "new version" of herself after filming scenes for her most recent role - Mother in the film, The End We Start From.
The flick, which is released in the UK next week (January 24) sees 30-year old Jodie attempt to flee her home and navigate motherhood in the wake of an apocalyptic flood. Based on author Megan Hunter's novel of the same name, the production begins with the Liverpudlian giving birth and subsequently raising her baby through adversity during an overwhelming climate crisis.
Asked by BBC Radio 4's Emma Barnett on her Woman's Hour whether the experience had put her off becoming a parent herself, Jodie explained to the contrary that it made her realise she has a "maternal instinct." She explained: "It's made me think about it [motherhood] differently absolutely. I think I've said this before but I think before going into this I didn't really think I had a maternal instinct, it wasn't a part of myself that I felt like I'd accessed."
Jodie continued: "And then going into this and learning and becoming more comfortable I just feel like I've stepped into a new version of myself. It was beautiful. And the newfound appreciation of like how selfless it is and what it demands of you and what really struck me actually was the complex relationship a lot of women then have with their own bodies. They feel unrecognisable to themselves or their partners and I just have so much respect for women."
The actress had a different outlook in the early in the filming process, however as she revealed she was terrified at the prospect of having to work with 15 different babies on set. The Killing Eve star told the BBC: "I started this process quite literally terrified. My hands were visibly shaking when I met an eight-week-old on set. I was like, 'Oh my god, what have I done?' It's one thing to act and think about everything else, but then actually being conscious of this precious little being and making sure that they're safe."

Jodie shot the film for 30 days straight between her stage hit Prima Facie moving from London to Broadway. And director Mahalia Belo revealed that despite hearing the part involved braving sub-zero waters near Lochgilphead, in Argyll and Bute, while topless, Jodie dived right in.
Mahalia told the Mirror: "It was freezing. We spoke to Jodie and she wanted to do it. She’s a believer in truth and felt this is what the character would do. It was so beautiful and she just went for it. We felt like such renegades, Jodie naked going into the water.
"We wanted to tell the woman’s story from pregnancy to that first year as truthfully as we could. [Jodie wanted] to serve it properly. It looked so real! We also had make-up do stretch marks and prosthetics made a few-weeks-after belly."
