John Fury, father of boxing and reality stars Tyson and Tommy Fury, has revealed that he prefers a simple life in the woods over luxury.

Despite his son's successes, John chooses to live off rabbit stew and what he can hunt, even spending Christmas alone in the woods with his dog. He admitted in an exclusive chat with Daily Star Sport, while speaking on behalf of Free Bets: "All I've done in my life has been hard work," and "I'm the only man in the world that probably spends Christmas in the middle of a wood in the dead of winter with himself and a dog."

Fury is simply proud of where he comes from. "That's what I do," he says with a grin and a casual shrug. "That's me. I don't wanna change. But what I am is a good Christian man. I respect people who respect me. I'm polite.

"I do make the odd, wise suggestion now and then. But do I know everything? Definitely not. Are there better people out there than me? Yes, there is. I don't deny that. My true claim to fame is that I've got two very famous sons. Multimillionaires. All the rest of them's doing well. They're all alive. I'm in good health. I'm happy. I'm in good spirit."

The head of the Fury clan occasionally shows a serious and protective side. "I've got good people working around me at the minute, and I can distinguish among them where I couldn't before," he says, adding, "I just hit them with the left hook and hope the police would never come the next day."

Fury believes he's changing, saying his first instinct is no longer to use his fists. "Now I can avoid that. Anger management works," he chuckles.

Those who watched the press-conferences for his son Tommy's clash with KSI might laugh at that last statement. In their first meeting, Fury flipped over the table. At the weigh-in, he punched and headbutted a flexiglass wall separating him from the YouTuber. People who only see Fury on camera may misunderstand him. He likes to switch between charm and fury, but there's also a philosophical side.

"I'm a man who likes my own company," he admits. "I've decided now that at this stage of the game, I'm a one horse race. I'm out on my own. I don't bother nobody because the world has passed me by now."

He added: "I'm out with the horse and buggy and people don't believe you anyway cos the people who believed in me, they're long gone. You know, you can ask certain people up and down and they will know John Fury in the Manchester area.

"They know what kind of character I've been and I had a lot of respect for them, as they have for me, you know. But for today's men it's a different ball game, isn't it? Today's population could not survive in the days I did the eighties, the nineties. That's when some great things happened, in them two decades. Thankfully I've lived through it.

"I've lived through the best years where if you wasn't a man and you couldn't look out for yourself, you didn't get nothing. You didn't get anywhere near the feeding bowl. To feed out that bowl, you have to be somewhat special.

"And at the end of the day, I did what I had to do. Did what I had to do to survive, and I'm still here to tell a story. It's a boring story, but it's only the people from yesteryear can understand where I'm coming from. It's no good me trying to explain to a young man who was born 15 years ago, because they don't know."

Having spent four years in prison, he added: "You just look at me as an old fat guy sat here, but I've lived more in 12 months than many have lived in a lifetime. I'm happy in my own skin."

"I don't need friends because today's kind of friends are not friends. If you've not got money and you've not got a big car or you're not somebody to show off with they don't wanna know you do they? And those people are not really interested in their company."
